Does the mic need phantom power to work?

The GoPros do not supply it.

That'll be it (IMO)

Thanks for your thoughts guys.

So I need to buy a mic with it's own power and make sure the mic is stereo?

Not necessarily. If your mic needs external power then you will need to supply it. If it doesn't then you don't. GetCarter is simply saying to check if your mic needs it.

If your mic is mono you don't need to replace it; just get a stereo to mono converter. They're a couple of quid in Maplin.

Any tips on time lapse settings please? I have no idea where to start.

I am a beginner myself, but I did do some experimenting with timelapse of the weekend just gone. For a static setting (window of my flat), I used 1 frame every 5 seconds, and that worked out fine - looked very cool.

For driving, I used 1 frame every 2 seconds, and 11MP picture quality.

The result was okay for motorway driving, but very disjointed for urban driving - in future I am going to try 1pic/sec for lots of changes, as I have seen some youtube footage of urban driving with that, and it looks far easier to follow.

Anyway hope that helps, Im pretty new so just experimenting at the moment.

The first thing to do is to work out how long the thing you want to record takes to happen, how big your memory card is, how pig each pic is, and calculate what interval you need in order to achieve it.

From memory, though, I have a feeling that I managed to record a sunrise to sunset on a 64GB card with a 60s interval.

Edit: Also, of course, how fast-changing your subject is. A time-lapse of driving is obviously going to need a much more frequent / shorter interval than, say, a construction project.

I usually base it on how long the event I'm capturing is and how long I want the end product to be.

For example, I'm driving down to Le Mans on Thursday, say roughly 10 hours door to door.

10 x 60 = 600 minutes.

600 minutes at 1s interval = 36,000 images = 1,200s (20m) playback at 30 frames per second, which I would say is too long.

Halving the pictures taken, i.e. At 2s intervals gives me a 10 minute video, still too much.

Moving on to a 10s interval means 120s playback (1/10 of 1s interval), which is more reasonable, but may be a bit jerky. Or 5s interval, which would give a 4m video.

I know I can fit about 6,000 images on the card I've got for my GoPro, so will go for the 10s interval (roughly 3,600 images) to ensure I get the whole journey albeit slightly jerky, rather than risk running out of memory before I get to Le Mans.

Bear in mind that the stills photos captured by the GoPro are far higher resolution than for video, so you can afford to reduce the stills resolution whilst still being able to produce 1080p for your final video. You can get far more photos on your card by doing this.

Looks like there's a new kid on the block. Or, at least, new to me.

I heard about via the following article on The Register. Worth looking at for the amazing stills of a high altitude balloon burst.

Tempted to sell my Drift HD and get one of those instead. I've never really got on with the Drift HD.

Should have done this - at 10s interval the car filled up just before the circuit gates, which in reality was another 45 mins to the campsite. Doh.

Guys, sorry if this has been covered recently. Any thoughts on product cycle?

I'm a little late on this one but wanting to upgrade to a hero 3 black, as my 2 is getting a bit long in the tooth now.
Anything news on the horizon for a new model?
