GoPro has kept this model undercover rather well. I wish they didn't! I also had my Hero 2 only a month ago which I liked very much except for the relative bulkiness and the poor audio quality (for in car recording). I've just ordered an external mic to improve the sound quality a bit. The bulkiness seems to be addressed in Hero 3, but what about the audio? Any improvements on that front as well?

Which Mic did you go for? I'm looking for one as well but not sure what to go for...DodoRacing said:

In fairness, the Hero2 is still a brilliant camera and is tiny for what it can achieve.A quick skim through the blurb does seem to say the existing bac-pac batteries will still fit, result.
Pretty good I'd have thought. I assume the main reason for keeping it a secret until now was to not damage the sales of the HD2, now they've announced it nobody's going to buy an HD2 unless they're massively reduced so if they've got any sense they'd have been shipping them to stores before they made the announcement.

YEah but it sounds like the only new tech is in the Black edition. the Silver edition is a rebadged Hero 2 and the white a rebadged Hero 1. Though they do have some extra bits added on. So the HD2 kit won't be completely left in the cold.Otispunkmeyer said:

The Silver and White are not just "rebadged" versions of the older devices, they're re-packaged as well are they not? I.e. they all use the new "Hero 3" chassis/case but it's just the internals which are based on the older tech? So you'd still benefit from the smaller size etc of the Hero 3, even if the video quality is the same as a Hero 1 or 2?
The base one is a bit more than a repacked 1 as well, they've built in the WiFi and even with a wifi backpack and software updated the HD1 can't stream video to the app.I wouldn't actually be that suprised if the White and silver are actually the same hardware but with different software as the extra cost of the components could well be less than the expense of manufacturing 2 different products.

The hero 2 is a great camera and there will always be something else just around the corner. You'll be waiting forever if you're always holding out for the latest thing. Just buy what's current and get using it. Think of all those things you can't do because "oh I'm waiting a couple of months for the new Hero/iPhone/tablet" or whatever.

It's a funny old world, if this was 5 years ago and it was priced at £3.5k they would've still sold by the bucket load to the broadcasters. We take for granted just how amazingly good these little things are. Like all technology, the price tumbles with time. The reason I got mine for "hostile places" was after seeing them on that James May programme where they attached them to weather balloons that went to stupid heights then crashed back - the HD picture quality was amazing and so was the integrity of the recordings.
