Had my first adventure with my new hero 4 silver today and not particularly happy.

It took a long painful time to get it to connect to the gopro app, coincidently an update was released yesterday to help fix this.

The mornings videos did come out very well and shooting at 720p 60fps was fine. Untill the camera crashed and had to turn off and on a few times till was back to normal.

Later on in the day i got a SD card error pop up, Again camera off, Card out and back in again, Carried on filming, Playback on the camera seemed fine.
Got home to view the videos, Turns out alot of the videos are now skipping, missing frames and generally corrupted which is very annoying as im sure anyone who was spent the day waiting to get home to view their videos.

Thankfully i had a 2nd battery, They really do not last long.

My opinion of gopros is definately getting worse, With a previous Hero 2 I always got issues with random crashes resulting in cameras needing resets.
I just dont have the trust that i can go out with it and film stuff and expect the results i want when i get home.

The SD card in question was a Brand new san disk class 10 UHS.

Damn, I was going to buy a 4 Silver to possibly replace my Sony action cam (I like the way GoPro mounts + the screen) but it looks like that might not be the best idea... Sony never gave me a single error and battery life is really good on it.

I moved away from GoPro a while ago, never looked back tbh way to flaky for me.

Not had a problem with an Action Cam yet, they will use any SD you throw at them, and so far they still ALL use the same batteries (none of this new model, new battery design rubbish).

I just setup my new Hero 4 Silver and found the playback video footage to be a bit skippy as well - am presuming this is not normal.

ETA: Found on the GoPro studio manual:
NOTE: Depending on your computer specifications and the in-camera recording format used, the files may play back choppy. This is to be expected and one of the reasons we will be converting the files into the GoPro CineForm format.

Can add Gopro Studio to my disliking aswell, Ok i understand its meant to be a basic video editor, But its missing out such basic features that you have to make creative work arounds to do simple things like split audio from video etc.

It crashes alot and has just lost about half hours of my work even though auto save was turned on.

hmmmmmm.

As I'm a knob/really lazy, I didn't do a search so I'll post this again here.

Just got one, mainly for an up and coming skiing trip but it'll get plenty of use in the future.

Not had one before and I'd like to know if there's any major tips I should take note of.

I have the Hero4 Silver, a 64gb SD card and I'll pick up a few more of these. I tried to get an additional battery but no one in Dubai seems to have any. I have the mounts it came with but also bought a 'Chesty' and an extendable pole.

What else is there that you'd consider essential?

Quick question:

Should I set my gopro for PAL or NTSC?
Does it make any difference?

Framerate AFAIK. 30/60/120 for NTSC and 25/50/100 for PAL

The guys with choppy video.

Which model of memory card are you using exactly? If SanDisk, it should be the Extreme not Ultra.

Also, are you viewing your footage from the memory card connected to the computer or have you transferred it to your HDD?

It doesn't really matter along as ALL your footage is the same (this includes footage from other cameras).

Cameras in the UK are set to PAL which is 25 or 50 fps, cameras in the US are set to NTSC which is 30 (29.97 really) or 60.

I been told Youtube transcodes to 30 fps so if you are putting stuff on there it might be best to use 30/60.

Hi Boro - thank you for your help and being such a useful resource on this thread.

I edited my original post above to add the following which has answered my question.

Ive been borrowing my buddies Hero3 Black for a couple of bike races - decided to get one myself. Had decided to get the Hero3+ Black as that seemed to have some useful improvements over his, but everywhere seems sold out.
Having done a bit of interweb research, the new Hero4 Silver basically seems to have all the advantages of the 3+ Black, with the addition of the touchscreen.

The Hero4 Black's upgrades (4k footage etc) will be wasted on me as i dont have a 4K tv, and would prefer longer recording times at 720/1080 anyway.

Halfords have the Hero4 Silver at £290, which means with my 10% discount its £261.

Anyone know of anywhere significantly cheaper?
And any reason to hold out for Hero3+ Black?

It is probably worth getting Quidco cash back on that price from Halfirds too.

Firmware update coming soon for the Hero4 apparently, looks to add a couple of cool features, shame the 240fps slow mo is only for the black though frown

I'm tempted. I had a hdr-as30 and loved it but dodgy HDMI out function. Thought I may as well get a refund as new ones probably due out and as100vr lowered in price.

I'll await some some reviews on the 4k, not sure on the sensor as its been dropped to 8mp.

IS is great on the Sony's and the 2 new cameras have been improved again so looking forward to the reviews.

Image stablization is a great benefit over the GoPro, but it's let down by the fact you only have 120 degree FOV with IS on.

One thing that is still missing in SONY is GoPro's ability to flip the footage and shoot upside down. Such a simple thing!

It looks like they finally fitted a normal screw mount!

Tested my Hero over the weekend with the chest mount - seemed to work OK.
When I play the video back on my PC (via quicktime...) it's a bit choppy (both direct from memory card and from HDD).
Used GoPro studio to 'convert' to AVI and ended up with massive files that won't play back on anything! All I get is sound (tried Windows media player and VLC).

What am I doing wrong?

Recorded at 720p Super View setting.
Is there anything other than quicktime (which never seems to work correctly on a PC) that I can use?

Cheers.
