Can anyone recommend an LCD screen for an original HD Hero? The GoPro one doesn't seem to be sold anymore so wondered if there are any alternatives? Or if the screen for the Hero 3+ will work with it?

Also, a question for anyone who has used both:

I was thinking of buying a 3+ Silver and a remote for give or take £250-270ish. That of course puts the 4 Silver in reach, but obviously not with a remote.

My question is, given that budget, is the 4 so much better as to be worth not having the remote for?

My needs:
1080 @60fps
Good low light performance
Timelapse

Uses:
Motorcycling (hence very keen on the remote as that makes the Drift very appealing)
Skiing
Wakeboarding
Snorkelling/diving

Also, I have a Hero2 plus the flat dive housing and floaty backdoor. Presumably the newer models are good to go for diving out the box?

On the others and, the Ghost S price drop to £250 for camera, remote and mounts looks like a ready to go solution and may be a better form factor for biking/skiing. Torn.

Not a gorpro but this ticks the boxes, has image stabilisation to. Only downer is you will need to upgrade the case for diving as standard is 5m. Think same maybe for the new gopro to. The Amazon price is like a yoyo but £270 direct should be doable.

Love mine. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-Action-HDR-AS200V-Rem...

Cheers bazza - I actually had a look at one in john Lewis this morning and was very impressed. The only thing that put me off was the £100-odd quid extra for the remote. Which led me to the AZ1 which is like the mini version of yours and comes with remote for the same price but the teeny battery life and lack of dive housing deep-sixed that. A pity as they look superb and the IS is tremendous.

I've just cracked and ordered the Drift Ghost-S. The footage looks comparable to the Hero3+ to my eyes and the form factor, remote and tagging mode have won me over!

It's pretty basic so no external mic, no wifi, only one FOV (wide), etc.

But it's great value for money for a starter camera, and then if/when you do decide to upgrade it can become a secondary camera.

Comparison here:

Thanks for this. Looks like a solid purchase to start off with. I don't want to spend too much, it will literally be strapped to the front of the bike and do nothing else.

Thanks
Mind you can't swap batteries in it either, so you might need to charge it over the day.

I had a notification set up with camelcamelcamel.com for when it dropped below £320 so £289 was a nice surprise at the weekend. It arrived by DPD today and is currently charging

my brother isn't a prime member and was looking at RM first class, he decided to wait and have free delivery. Ordered Saturday evening and arrived bank holiday Monday.eek had he paid RM it would have only just arrived. Seems these self employed delivery drivers work bank holidays.

Had a good play, time lapse built inside the camera is pretty good.

I can't remember the last time I used my cameras - and I have two Hero 3 Silvers and a Drift HD+. I should really sell some of them. The Drift has been a bit of a disaster - I bought it as a helmet cam for PoV in-cockpit shots but the footage makes me feel ill and also its auto-contrast gets very confused between the relative darkness of the cockpit and the brightness of the view through the windscreen making it over-exposed. I'm sure it's a great camera though.

I think that if I was buying afresh I would go for a Hero 4 Silver as a primary camera and the basic Hero as a secondary - that really does seem to be a sweetspot, money-wise, if you're into a multi-camera setup as you only need one of your cameras to be recording sound.

I don't really want to spend much so was looking at the basic hero.

However since the kids want to use it too - I think the lack of wireless for viewing footage back on I Pads and lack of changeable case (damage) puts me off.

Is the next alternative the Hero 3 white?

Just to return to this, after much faffing, I talked myself into your Sony bazza. Really impressed with the IS and the colour profile is better than the GoPro IMO. Sadly, the Drift seemed outclassed despite my opinion that it has the best form factor and ease of use.

Also, the Sony's ability to shoot in XAVCD convinced me that I could just about call it a 'work purchase'.

Great recommendation, thank you. Glad I looked at the Sony...

Thanks for that, I was going to ask if the Hero was worth going for or the AS30. Have just ordered the AS30, was swinging that way anyway, but a straight answer decided it.

Can anyone recommend a decent case for the camera and a few accessories, pole, mounts etc?

Personally I'd get a Pelicase (or a cheap knock-off) with foam squares insert and make your own. It's much more versatile.

No problem Disastrous glad you like to I'm enjoying mine, the menu is a bit of a faf but okay when you get used to it. One thing i thought it had was ability to playback timelapse but seems not to. My brother has the gopro H4 which is great but once moving you really miss the IS.

learnt something new today, GoPro mounts crumble when exposed to petrol. Fortunately it didn't have a GoPro mounted to it...

Hi guys, I'm off to USA (near LA) for two weeks soon. I'm also going diving in Malta in August.

I'll be doing parachuting in the USA and think a Hero4 Silver with a wrist and head mount would hit both diving and skydiving.

I've done a fair amount of reading, and think this is the right way to go. Is there a camera I'm missing that can compete?

Are they still cheaper in the USA? No issues with warranty etc?

I'd look at the AS200 - you can get a dive housing for it cheaply from Sony and I find it beats the GoPro I compared it to in most ways. Ultimately there are adapters available to allow you to use GoPro's mounting system for pretty much any other camera (they have the widest range of options for mounting I think) so you can really just choose on camera specs and form factor.
