Ok, so I'm going to sound like a total ameture here. I've just got a go-pro hero4 black. I want to use it for track day footage. Obviously a fair bit of the footage is going to be dull, so is there a recommended software for using on an iPad to edit it? I'm not looking for professional quality, just able to edit, maybe add a soundtrack or two.....

An iPad won't be ideal, but the iMovie software would probably be a good place to start.

Did you ever try converting to prores as the DI for FCP? ProRes is really for Apple and once you have converted it usually works very fast with FCP.
Nope, and at the risk of sounding flippant, I couldn't be bothered with a solution where it didn't work out of the box. I work in TV and spend way too much of my life worrying about codecs, wrappers and all that to have to deal with it at home as well!
I have just got a GoPro Hero for Xmas, along with Adobe Premiere elements and this is the workflow i was planning to do. I am used to Adobe software having used various versions of Photoshop and Photoshop Elements for years, so i thought this would be an ideal place to start, having never done any video editing at all.

Wanting to keep things simple, but not wanting to loose quality needlessly, is there anything that i should be doing / not doing? Any particular format that i should be saving in? In Stills i tend to edit in a lossless format (TIFF etc.) is there an equivalent in video?

TIA for any help that is offered!

In all honesty, H264 is good enough for most applications (it's the codec used on BluRay), you can crank up the bit rate if you want more quality. If you are running on a Mac Apple ProRes is good and you can use some of the HQ settings to keep as much info as you can.

You can go AVI uncompressed if you want, but that's just a waste of disk space if I'm honest.

I've been looking at the Hero4 Black but reading about "helicopter sound" & the need for a recall.

Can any owners/users please comment on any issues they've experienced.

Also, is this the best value for money compared to the other models in the range?

Thanks in advance smile

I have a Hero 4 Black that I've owned for a while but rarely used. I have noticed a noise that sounds like a heart beat over the recording which I presume is the problem you describe above and subsequently found on other forums. I'll drop GoPro an email and see whether they'll replace it.

Here is mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URW0hC2TT4w

Only did it with the wifi turned on. GoPro confirmed it was faulty.

I sent it back to the retailer as at the time GoPro themselves couldn't promise me a replacement on time.

It would also seem that some are noisier than others.

Thanks, mine is much louder than that. I've emailed GoPro the video and awaiting a response

I'm not sure about the latest iPad Pro. But my brand new 15" MacBook Pro Quad Core 16GB RAM was nearly on fire editing about 30mins worth of skiing footage taken in full HD from a GoPro. I think the iPad will just curl up in the corner and die trying to edit footage from a GoPro but I stand to be corrected.

I have an iPad Pro and wouldn't contemplate editing footage on it, although you probably could with iMovie.

I'm after a cable to charge my GoPro while recording in the car. Is it just a case of buying any 12v to mini usb from eBay?

Clearly I don't want to buy the wrong one and blow up my GoPro so any advice would be welcomed.

Buy a branded adapter from Amazon that has a couple of USB ports and can give a couple of amps to at least one of the ports.

Then depending on the length you need......

Lindy mini USB cables are rather good as you can still charge ok at a longer length. I've a 5 meter one works great. The thinner cable ones at this length will not charge.

Great thanks, I've bought a Spigen with 2 ports (2.4A each) and a Lindy 2m cable with right angled mini usb, both arriving by Prime tomorrow.

I have a mounting question.

I recently bought the official GoPro handle bar/post mount and attached my GoPro to the passenger headrest post in my car, extending with a few brackets to give a good view out of the front of the car including the driver and dash.

The video is excellent, but the camera must be vibrating minutely and this is picked up by the mic as a horrendous creaky noise.

This is using the standard case with open back. I have a skeleton case that I haven't tried in this position, would that be better? How about lubricating the mounting joints with a bit of Vaseline (ooh er, missus!)?

They've confirmed my GoPro is faulty and asked me to provide proof of purchase and serial number. Fingers crossed it'll get replaced with a fully functional one but not holding out too much hope based on the comments and videos on Youtube.

likely to be one of the brackets, make sure they're properly tight. If you're extending then it only takes a little force to make it move a long way but even a little bit of plastic rubbing will gives squeaks.

Lubricating would give you exactly the opposite of what you want, more movement, it'll likely be less squeaky, but much harder to make it stable.

The best option would be a frame mount and an eternal mic, lowers the weight and moves the mic from the area, but just tightening everything up(use a screw driver or a thumbscrew tool), or adding a bit of extra support from the other headrest should do the job.

Any recommendations on a GoPro Mic? Want to record some engine noise on my motorbike rather than just wind, so maybe a wired one so I can took it in to various places.

Also, any recommendations on a third party frame mount thingy, don't fancy paying full whack for a genuine GoPro one.
