Any recommendations on a GoPro Mic? Want to record some engine noise on my motorbike rather than just wind, so maybe a wired one so I can took it in to various places.

Also, any recommendations on a third party frame mount thingy, don't fancy paying full whack for a genuine GoPro one.
Anyone?

From what I've heard you'll need the official GoPro usb adaptor as some of the third party ones don't interface properly. Other than that a lapel mic would probably be easiest for you, a cheap one can be picked up from amazon or Ebay but might be overcome by an exhaust.

You'll need a dead cat, be it foam or fur to lessen the wind noise aswell regardless of what mic you choose.

There are a few threads on PH of people using various mics for exhaust sounds as well, albeit for cars the principle is the same.

Does anyone have experience with the Hero 4 Session? I intend to use it as a motorcycle helmet cam mostly and the smaller size looks ideal to me. I'm just curious to see if anyone has experienced anything good or bad.

Yes, I bought one a month or two ago and have been using it on my daily commute (13 miles each way). It seems pretty waterproof, though I have noticed droplets sticking to the lens - I assume that's no different to any other device. Battery life is around 90-120 minutes at a guess for 1080p 30fps filming. It's a little more fiddly than my Hero 4 Black for deleting files, as you need to go in to the app. It can take a while to engage with the app, and for the sake of the battery you'd probably want to leave wifi off unless altering settings. The camera attaches reasonably well to the helmet using the supplied curved mount (on top for me, just clear of the raised visor), although I got nervous and tethered it with some fishing line to a second curved mount at the rear of the helmet, concealing the line with a strip of electrical tape. Not an elegant solution, but it's unlikely to get lost if the adhesive on the main mount fails. I have no previous experience of the adhesive mounts, hence my caution. Starting and stopping the camera is a simple button push. You get two different skeleton cases for flexibility, plus several joint options. Overall it's a fairly neat (or would be but for my paranoia) set up that doesn't appear to act like much of a windbreak. I paid £150 from Amazon, and I think it's good value. If you want pics of the setup or video to get an idea of footage quality, let me know and I'll pop something up.

If it's still the same adhesive as used by all the previous mounts, I wouldn't be to worried. My mate used them on his trackday car that gets a fair bit of abuse and it stayed on, even in the gravel trap.

Thanks for the heads-up on using wifi. My main use will be on longer trips, saving battery life would then be the key. (Though I have a USB connector on my Optimate Cable, so in theory I could charge it while riding).

Cheers, I might remove the second mount at some point in that case.

With regard to longer rides it's definitely doable, but there will be some limitations as a result. Battery life is quoted as 'up to' 2 hours. To charge it you need to open a flap, which means it's no longer waterproof. Sticking a USB cable in would mean if helmet-mounted, you'd probably want to secure the cable in some way as it would be vulnerable to working itself loose within a very short time.

Charging on the go would be a emergency method. I'd let the USB cable run through my jacket, just don't forget it when getting of the bike. I'm thinking of doing the same with my SENA of phone.

Not being waterproof would be a bigger issue biggrin

I quite like the looks of the GoPro Session due to the size, or lack of, which would be great for mounting on the bike. I was tempted to get one when they were £225 but after reading a couple of reviews I though that they might be a little overpriced.

I bought a Garmin Virb last year but due to the big, clunky looking mounts I've never really used it on the bike but I reckon that the GoPro would be ideal.

With the new RRP down to £150, is it worth the money?
Also just seen the Hero4 Session.

Would be interested in hearing views bearing in mind this would be my first action camera

If you have any questions other than what I covered in my two posts above, fire away and I'll do my best to answer.

Hi,

Can anyone advise on a decent external microphone, I don't want to spend too much but would like a microphone to catch the sound of my ITBs.

Thanks
Keith

My replacement Hero 4 Black arrived today after a three week turnaround from the warranty department and it has exactly the same issue, joy!

My trusted Hero3 Black died a terrible death in Tallinn over the weekend, fell off a go kart and was run over frown

I'm looking at either the Hero4 Silver or Session as a replacement, and with its size and new price point the Session looks very attractive indeed. Will be mostly used for things like track days, road trips, outdoor activities etc. and the Session's two microphones seems to cut out wind noise much better.

So... can anyone convince me to get anything other than the Session? smile

I got a Session - cracking little device. Fire and forget easy, good form factor and basically just works.

Got the Session and put it through it paces over the weekend, really impressed with it especially considering it's only £160. I like the 1-click record and shut down function, even if it does take a couple of seconds to power up. Another small but useful feature is the fact that you can rotate it 90 or 270 degrees in its case so no need to mess around with right angled mounts.

However it wasn't as small as I was expecting - it's thicker than a normal GoPro. But when you put them both into a housing the Session is much smaller!

Here's a vid for anyone interested:

I could do with some advice. I've just bought my first GoPro - the Session.

I understand the cheaper version now only comes with one mount, and two mounting points (curved and straight). I'd like to be able to mount in the following places as a minimum:

- Inside the car (windscreen)
- On my bike helmet

I'd also like to be able to use the following places:

- Rear/side of the car
- On my chest (or similar alternative) for hiking adventures

Plus, any other common things people use them for. I have only bought it for an upcoming road trip, but what else fun could I use it for? If there's not much that appeals, perhaps I'll sell it after the road trip.

What will I need over and above the kit I just bought?

I have just bought the silver 4,couple of questions.

1) Do I need to sink remote every time I turn on camera and remote ?

2) How do you set the camera to a narrow view as I can't seam to get mine on any other setting than wide angle?

3) What is the main difference between 720 over 1080 in quality?

Cheers for any help

can't help with the remoe question, I don't use it often enough

only some resolutions allow narrow FOV, swipe up from the bottom of the touch screen to get in to the video menu, then select Field Of View and it will give you Wide, Medium or Narrow, whichever are available for your chosen resolution.

1080 is a larger and higher quality resolution, essentially more pixels and more detail. 720 has higher available frame rates as the data rate is less due to their being less pixels. if you intend to watch the resulting footage on a decent quality screen you'll want 1080 or higher for it to look its best unless you're specifically going for the high frame rate.

Anyone able to assist?

Also, thinking about getting a 128gb card, though the Session says it can only take 64gb. Can anyone comment?

I've bought myself a suction mount for £20. Not sure if there's anything else worth looking at? My mate mentioned an external mic, but will that really be worth it/necessary?
