I've got a track day on Monday and will be taking my Hero 4 Black.

I've already set Spot Metering to "ON" but are there any other settings I should enable?

I don't know the difference between 4k and 4k Superview, is one better than the other, it seems that the former records at 30fps whereas the latter 24fps?

Do you need 4k?

1080 will give you smaller, easier to edit files, and use less battery.

In car to out of car can sometimes get the exposure wrong. Protune with the phone app will allow you to bump the EV a little which can help.

I don't really need 4k but thought I might as well record in the highest resolution possible. It will only be going on Youtube.

Battery life isn't an issue as it will be plugged into the 12v socket and the camera will remain in the car so changes of light shouldn't be a problem. Should I still use ProTune?

Fair point about the battery smile

Regarding pro tune, have a look at this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27PcQObpNsQ

The in car was filmed with a gopro, but because it was dark inside the car and very bright outside, the camera under exposed by default on all the metering modes. I used protune to bump the EV to +0.3 which gave a more natural exposure in car. Obviously you'll be more interested in the out of car stuff, and if the camera is just looking outside it will be just fine, but if you're trying to capture you and the outside, protune can be useful to balance the ambient light.

Thanks Jon, I'll have a play with the Protune settings on Monday. My passenger is pretty clued up when it comes to cameras so hopefully he can lend a hand too.

Interesting video too, I've just put the 5th set of Michelins (rears) on the C63..

Disappointed. Better drones out there for less money.

I'll be interested to see how much they've improved the IQ for the new Hero5/Session, but not enough to buy it for now.

The hero 5 is now waterproof without case, so it can actually record decent audio, and it has 3 mics so finally stereo. It also has a touch screen on the back and has voice control. All this sounds amazing, but also probably means the battery will last 4 seconds. My hero 3+'s last about 35 minutes with wifi on.

Karma VS DJI. Seem very similar, need to wait for IQ tests between the cameras. So far the Karma has the advantage of being much easier to carry about as it all packs into a backpack, you don't need an ipad as the controller has a screen. Also the gimbal comes out so you effectively have a decent hand gimbal. I'd have one over a phantom at the moment, though DJI have a big announcement in a week.

Thought the waterproof without casing was good, then saw it was only 10m which means no scuba diving, etc... at all.

Don't see a housing for it yet.

Think GoPro have done an outstanding job here and with that price point I reckon they'll sell a stack of Karmas - especially as you get the gimball, case and $100 discount on a Hero5. As always DC Rainmaker has a great first stab at the lineup:

Unfortunately at the moment most people only think of DJI in the drone space. There's a whole crop of 'Selfie drones' like the Karma coming out at the moment, and most of them are half the price, and include a decent 4K camera. I was really expecting GoPro to add a lot of 'smart' features to fight off the competition, but really there's nothing obviously special about the Karma at all, except the high price.

I've been waiting for a new a GoPro to be released as I want to get one for a couple of bike races and trips next year.

The new models look pretty good but I'm just not sure at the moment whether to go for the Hero5 or the Hero5 Session. I read the DC Rainmaker review of the new Garmin camera but it seems to be very expensive compared to the GoPro.
Hopefully somewhere will start discounting them soon as always seems to be the case with Garmin cameras!

Edit: Just read that a Garmin dropped the price of their new Virb from $499 to $399 within minutes of the Gopro launch so they're now the same price!

I was thinking the same thing - Hero5 vs Session5.
Both offer more than enough features for me.

Ignoring prices, I think the only advantage the Hero has over the Session is the removable battery.

Voice control sounds interesting. I wonder how well it'll cope with being shouted at over engines/wind etc..
Potentially much better than the old wrist mounted remote that I used to use.

I've been starting to look at go-pro's and drones (still no idea if I'd actually use it!) and seriously tempted by the new karma. It looks like they've got the pricing spot on to sucker me in- if I just buy the camera, fine its not increased too much. but I'd probably want the hand held gimbal thing to smoothing out footage etc.... by the time you add that in, its only a couple hundred more to get the karma drone (which gives the camera and gimbal)

I love toys/gadgets, this would be right up there in the awesome toys stakes, I do cycle, canoe, ski, climb etc.... so there are things I could film, but I just don't know if I'd manage to film anything decent or that people (or even myself!) would want to watch back

This exactly. The only thing I'm waiting for before ordering is the DJI announcement next week!

It looks like the drone itself is more than a couple of hundred - try $800, and another $300 if you want the Hero 5 to go with it. For that price you can get drones with a lot more features.

It's not clear how the Karma works with action sports stuff - they've not talked about Follow Me or Watch Me type modes that other drones have and the controller you get with it is not something you could carry whilst you're skiing. It's a bit surprising they've said so little about it.

The karma doesn't have a 'follow me'function unfortunately

I'm tempted by a GoPro 5 black, mainly because it has GPS. Will it work like I'm thinking though and record a map of a circuit as I'm doing a track day (then hopefully being able to overlay a little map on the video?)

I know the price for the drone excludes the cost of the camera, but I was meaning I've been looking at drones and also looking to buy a go-pro type camera. I just think they've managed to get their pricing spot on for buying the drone/ camera/ gimbal all in one package.

now the dilemma is still- what would I actually film? or would it all end up in a cupboard after the first month!
