Just an update on my earlier post regarding my Nikon KeyMission 360.

I loved the quality of the camera itself and the footage was great too,, but tried and failed too many times to get it to work with the control app for iOS and had no joy at all getting the dedicated remote to work.

So thanks to good old Amazon prime it's gone back for a full refund.

And once again, despite spending almost £100 on. The very best fastest certified card formmy GoPro 4 Silver, it came up with another card error again, just when I needed it most lapping Donington with the Aston Martin Vulcan!

So that's it, the GoPro is going in the bin.

So I've replaced it with a Garmin Virb Ultra 30, that I managed to get for a silly low amount of the Internet, so worth a gamble!

Done a a few tests,,and so far it's a joy to use, the app is fast and responsive, and just love the gmetrix overlays too!

Watch out for some Caterham 620R footage from it very soon!,

The G-Metrix overlays are good, but I've only just today sussed out why I was getting gaps in some of my data. If you have any issues give me a shout.

That's good to know, thanks bud! I thought the gps sampling rate was quite good on them?

I also fancy getting some of car data into it too,,but I think I need to get a can bus adapter for my MBE ECU, as the OBD port on the caterham does not have the right feeds.

The issues I had initially - which I think I've now overcome - aren't so much to do with the GPS sampling rates. It's more down to gaps in G-metrix displaying of data, or randomly dropping some of the metrics part way round. I think I've sussed out why it does it and how to get it working normally (it's a 10 second job.) It's got the data, it just doesn't always display it if it's out of sync basically.

One thing I'd keep in mind if you're doing longer sessions - if it's turned off (properly off, rather than standby) in between clips to save battery you can end up with gaps in the drawing of the circuit. I suspect that won't be an issue for vehicle based use, and it can be overcome for anyone using it (as I am) with another GPS device by pulling in the .fit file from that device (in my case I use either my running watch or cycling GPS - something I'd do anyway.) So it may not even affect you.

Thanks again for the great pointers. I do have several other garmin devices I can use for gps, one of them my Forerunner,,do you think that might be a better option for the GPS data when linked?

If your use will involve extending the battery life by switching it off between clips (so assuming you're shooting 4K, we're talking in excess of an hours continuous recording) but you still want it to show a continuous track, then maybe. In the event of a long road trip for example - you won't be recording continuously but may well want to show your position relative to start and finish (or show how you're in the twisties) then be it from the Virb or another device you're going to want continuous GPS data - or you end up with gaps. But given that you can charge on the go, you may well be (weather permitting) running it off a battery pack or from a cigarette lighter - in which case, you can have it on standby continuously. If in doubt, record a GPS track with something - even your phone will do.

For track days where you won't be out continuously for long periods you'll probably be fine with the battery life - and you'll be stopping and able to switch over the battery.

I'm coming at this from the angle of trail running, where I'm out for 6-12 hours at a time which is why gaps in the on-board GPS data were appearing.

And I fear I've massively overcomplicated the issue now anyway...sorry. It's not a major issue but when I sussed it out this morning I was pleased to have done so.

Has anyone got experience of non-GoPro battery BacPacs for a Hero4 please? I need it still to be water(rain)resistant and on Amazon there seems only the choice of GoPro's own BacPac(with some very variable reviews about which actual model you will get) and one by BPS which is 1500MAh. The GoPro website still lists them at twice the price of Amazon and I need 10-12.... Is it a case of you pays your money etc?

I did see a 3rd party cover with a waterproof USB connector but the 1.5m of cable could be hazard for what I'm doing(normally I run these from external battery packs anyway but need them to be happy in wet conditions for this job)

I have these for my Hero 3+, I'm not sure if they do a version for the 4

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00M3PAWFI/ref=cm_sw_r...

I have found them to be as good as the original batteries.

Wasabi and Smatree for me, both work equally well and come with either a dual or triple charger. I've had no problems and not seen any noticeable difference in battery life

Does anyone know of any relatively long and stable mounts I could use to get the gopro about 3 ft away from the car so I can point it back at a wheel?

As much as I love the hague mounts, ideally I need something a bit more rough and ready (and gopro sized) for portability and speed of setup!

Skids are always coming smile

Is anyone going to be getting hold of the Fusion?

https://shop.gopro.com/EMEA/cameras/fusion/CHDHZ-1...

£699.99 is pretty epxensive for it to sit in the drawer with my other 3 gopro's!

But look at the video you can get with it...

I’ve moved away from GoPro now and gone all Garmin.

Very happy with my Virb Ultra 30, and I also now have the Virb 360 too.

Pleased with the results so far.

Bit of a bump, but I'm wanting something half decent for a few upcoming road trips and track days.

Yorkshire man's budget, but I don't want a £35 pos either, so happy to spend if I'm getting good vfm.

A good mic is crucial, I don't mind if it's an external one, so long as it doesn't cost the same as the camera.

I have an SJ M10 at the minute, visually it's "acceptable", audibly appalling at best. But I might use that as a rearview cam.

I looked at the M20, but I don't think it's a big enough step up over the M10.

IS is (probably) crucial too, a use a rollbar/harness bar mount (official gopro) which isn't 100% steady, but pretty close.

Not bothered about stills, IP rating, dashcam modes, etc... Or having the latest and greatest model, again, Yorkshireman don't forget.

Are there any reliable sources of used/refurb gopros? I know gopro sell refurbs themselves, but there's not that much of a saving.

Also, I have a lot of gopro compatible accessories, so I guess I'm heading down that path.

Ta folks.
