Sorry, I'm not following this at all.

Let's say 24fps is the minimum you need for good quality viewing (debatable, but it's generally so).

30fps will, therefore be slightly smoother than 24fps, if you are recording and playing back at the same frame rate and also as long as your playback device can handle that frame rate. Some playback devices, in Europe especially, will be designed to play at 25fps because that is our TV standard here, unlike N.America where it's 30fps. So those 25fps playback devices will try and adapt the 30fps footage to 25fps which generally ends up looking jerky.

If you record at 30fps and slow it down with your playback device it will inevitably not look very smooth.

If you record at 60fps, or 120fps and playback at 30fps you'll get smoother slo-mo than if you record at 30fps and slow down the playback.

Does that all make sense?

Also, I'm interested to hear what all those people considering buying the Hero 3 for the 4K recording are going to view those 4k recordings on.

Apologies, I misread your post and assumed you were planning to shoot at 30fps and then try to edit slow-mos with that footage (which wouldn't work). 60fps footage played back at 25-30fps would look perfectly fine, like all the slow-mo GoPro footage you might have seen from the Hero2, only at 1080p.

Just noticed that the silver edition does 60fps @ 720p. That's probably adequate for me actually! As not massively fussed in the difference between 720 & 1080!!

Yes, anything less than 2x speed is not really worth bothering with. I would imagine that once you've played with 60fps for a while you'll be kicking yourself that you didn't get the Black and could play with 120fps (which would give you 4x slow-mo). This is the feature of the Black that I'm most excited about personally.

ahh, i didn't see that anywhere in the tech spec? i didn't realise the black went to 120fps?! Going to have to do some thinking now then! As that's the feature that i'm most looking forward to aswell!

What sort of file size are you looking at though for say 30 mins of footage shot at 720p @ 120fps?! surely an outrageous size?

I'd hazard a guess that some of these are shot at 480fps and upwards. It'll be a few years before we see those sort of frame rates in a GoPro.

Yes, it'll be big. I've spent the last year with a Hero2 shooting at 720p @ 60fps and I've not struggled with capacity. 120fps should be roughly double the size. Hopefully the media storage technology will keep pace with the camera development as the shooting speeds go up.

Right ok, so now i guess i just need to make my own decision! I wish there was an option to have the black edition without the wifi remote!!

What exactly can you do with the remote? Is it only to set up stationary shots etc? What's the range of the camera and iphoen app for example? Do you need to be within a certain distance of the camera?

I'd imagine you can do everything with the remote that you can do with the camera itself, given that the camera only has two buttons.

Does the iPhone app work via BlueTooth (at least when there's no WiFi connection around)? If that's the case then it won't work for me or many others anyway on account of the battery draw.

I'm not 100%, but I believe it connects via an adhoc wifi network straight to the gopro

Ah, OK. The net result is still the same though; too taxing on the phone's battery in the situations where I find myself using the GoPro.

On the HD2 you can do everything on the remote that you can on the camera buttons, and the remote screen duplicates the display on the camera. From the pictures above it looks like the app gives you easier control of the menus than the camera or remote does. And yes its an ad hoc WiFi network.
