Thanks for the tips, but yes, I took it hand-held, it was a spontaneous shot really, didn't have my tripod with me. The focus point I chose was in between the headlights on the bonnet, may be the shutter speed wasn't fast enough and I guess the driver's side door mirror looks sharp enough...with a wide open aperture, is it possible to have the whole car (or atleast the front of the car) in good focus though in low light like this?
There are a few variables involved when it comes to Depth of Field (DoF), but generally you don't want to be shooting with a wide-open aperture (even at that focal length/distance) if you want the whole car in focus, but hand-held you might struggle to get the exposure you need without opening the aperture up. It's worth thinking about the most important aspect of the subject and having that in focus. In this case, I would probably go for either the headlights (although the focus might be diffused by the light flare) or the windscreen. Either way it's got to look intentional and not just mis-focused.

I couldn't tell you the intricacies of it to be honest, although I could find out for you. It is a wide-arched car though if that helps.
Oooh, perhaps it is a 6.3 then! I have a soft spot for the Virage family Astons. smile

At the risk of ridicule for both my choice of car, and my photography skills...

...new car? Yup. Trip home to see the folks? Yup. Farnborough to Swansea? Yup. Take the M4? Not on your nelly! Up to Gloucester to cross the Severn, then weave my way across mid Wales. The gravelly parking area is the one at the top of the A4069. I was taking a breather to let a bunch of motorhomes get well clear of the hill before trying to 'make the most' of the facilities available wink

Camera is a lowly Fujifilm A860 on 'auto' setting, so no 'arty' effects available on the camera, and the only edit was to compress the pictures down to the upload limit.

More experimenting with the low light stuff...here's another shot...
Porsche 944

I guess you could say I was inspired by that Aventador shot...only less polished in my case and using 'natural' light. paperbag

I like the contrast of colour between the orange and blue and the way the orange light leaks down the side of the car defining the shape of the arches. My eye is drawn straight to the brightest point of the image though (the street light) and because of the ambient light the front end is dark apart from the plate. Have you tried a shot with the front end of the car facing the light? I think with some more muted colours it might work fine the way it is to be honest.

Quick one from yesterday, had three minutes to take some exterior shots of this car!

Yes, couldn't get rid of that burning hot area in post as I also wanted to maintain the natural tones of the shot (editing newbie)...I should have tried the the other way too, that would have been interesting. Couldn't believe how quickly the natural light changed within 10 mins!

Final batch from my Wales road trip. This time all shot with my DSLR and Sigma 10-20mm lens.

This next one would have been better if we had moved the Cayman and 911 slightly, but it was just so flipping cold, we couldn't be bothered and just ended up retreating back to the warmth of our respective cars!
