The DJI Phantom 3 SE has just been released worldwide. Excellent value for a first time drone user. On their site at $599.
Having a ball with mine after a week or so, great stuff.
That looks great value!Having a ball with mine after a week or so, great stuff.
What are the downsides?
I have been toying with the idea of a Mavic, for use with taking my own promo videos for my company, and just playing about, but couldn't justify the expense as I know after a few weeks it will sit in the drawer with GoPro's and other gadgets.

Good to know Davie. Thanks for the update.
I'm still hovering over the tomtop purchase.
With vouchers / cash back / current offer the flymore can be got for £855.
That's a good shout. I was too impatient to faff about with the vouchers but also didn't realise that was the level of savings. The bag i got with the fly more combo is really good quality but doesn't have space for any extra batteries. I think i'll sell it on and buy a hard case with space for more bits. I'm still hovering over the tomtop purchase.

Is the Phantom 3 SE a worthwhile purchase for a beginner who wants decent stills and video?
Depends what you want from a drone - have a look at the DJi Spark Fly More Combo - the thing that puts me off using my drone is slogging my Phantom around. The Spark is very capable for the size. I'm very tempted to buy a Spark.Emeye said:

I didn't even know these existed! Had a look at them last night, and they look pretty good.
I font have intentions of capturing dynamic shots from thousands of feet up and from miles away, just to get some images and video of our work from different angles.
Think that could be a winner.

1. To work you need a PfCO from CAA. Not difficult to get but costs circa £1k
2. Maximum height is 400 ft
3. Maximum distance 500m

Thanks for the info.
I was unaware that using it for my own purposes and was illegal in that respect. Using stills and videos for our portfolio, not for resale, or reward?
You be fine with that subject to max height of 400 feet and within visual range (which CAA thinks should be 500m).I was unaware that using it for my own purposes and was illegal in that respect. Using stills and videos for our portfolio, not for resale, or reward?
Oh and 150m away from people and built up areas
Look at Dronecode
It's becoming more difficult to fly these now. People just think you're up to no good and breaking every rule in the book.
It won't stop me mind you but it does take the shine off it somewhat.
Very annoyed at a silly mistake i made though, had my Mavic all packed up in all the official DJI bags and all gimbal / camera protective covers on and dropped it about 2 feet. Resulted in the ribbon cable protector plate at the back of the camera having a small crack and deforming slightly.
Even more annoying is that DJI won't just send me the small part but want me to send it in for full diagnostics. It flies fine and the quality of the images aren't affected.

Mavic Air looks good... wish i held off getting a spark.
It does look good! In fact, more what I would want than the Mavic Pro I already have. As people have commented, flying these things is becoming increasingly difficult. Here in Portugal, new Laws due out soon will include Civil Liability Insurance. Depending upon what that amounts to, I may just not bother with a drone anymore.
As a keen photographer, I really like what drones can offer but not if it is going to be a hassle for amateurs.
