I've extensive research on the BNUC-S qualification.

Essentially it breaks down into two bits, a two day theory course with multiple choice exam that covers things like air law, safety, navigation, meteorology etc and an airworthiness test where they review your flight procedures (including signing off your operations manual) and review your flying skills.

Have you got a source for the potential legislation change? I'm planning to sit the BNUC-S in February.

Yes, all was fine after the crash, bit muddy but after a wipe down she took straight off with no fuss!
Great stuff. without tempting fate, I havn't had an oops moment yet.

It was reported in the news on several occasions recently (BBC) that the Gov was apparently looking at changing the legislation to make it simpler for film makers etc to operate. This also might have something to do with the likes of Amazon and their proposed delivery service. I havn't seen any other details.

The US has already made such moves, so I'm just unsure about the entire thing at the moment. I've also a slight disability that might go against me anyway though I would love to sit the BNUC-S.

I would really like to hear about your experiences of sitting the exam as it all seems a bit unclear from their website of what is actually expected.
I've just sat my BNUC-S, just waiting for the results next week. Although expensive it was well worth the money, I've been through a practical test before (although only as a camera operator) a couple of years ago but it sounds like they've made that a bit more involved than back then.

Yeah pretty much

So you have

The Theory course
Day 1 Lesson
Day 2 am Lesson and recap on day 1
Day 2 pm Test (open book, 60 questions, multiple choice, 1hr 15minutes)

After you receive your results you can submit yours ops manual. Apparently there's a new template they're sending out that makes it a lot easier, I wrote one on the old template a couple of years ago and it wasn't fun
Once that is submitted the turnaround is usually 10 days, they may ask you to change some bit, add bits in etc, when you reply yours does normally go to the back of the queue so can take a bit for the reply to say they're happy with it.

When they send you this confirmation back to say they're happy they will give you the details for booking your practical course, there are 4 examiners in the UK at the moment and they will give you the phone number/email of one of them to arrange a date.

The practical test involves the following

A figure 8 loop in front of you but with your UAV side on (so it makes a sideways 8), it can be over a reasonable area so doesn't have to be mega tight

A climb backwards away from yourself to a reasonable altitude (so with the nose pointing towards you but the UAV travelling backwards)

What they call "the multirotor roulette"
They'll ask you to fly a long way out to the point where you can't tell which end of the UAV is which and ask you to look away and use your rudder to turn the UAV, they'll tell you to stop turning and look back, then you have to bring it back towards yourself (you are allowed to use intelligent orientation mode, but not fail safe)

Then just a demonstration of your failsafe, the UAV doesn't have to actually land unless you want it to anyway, they just want to see that it will come back and begin a descent.

The site survey before the practical test is as important as the flying itself, you need to show that you've checked for public rights of way (footpaths etc), controlled airspace and notams (these can be checked using www.skydemonlight.com

You can fail if before you even take off if you haven't noted anything about controlled airspace/notams if there are any

He did say that the manoeuvres don't have to be absolutely perfect but if you can't show that you can control your UAV safely you will be failed. They will ask you to fly in Attitude mode for some of the test too.

Can't see the CAA making it any easier to fly UAS commercially for any reason and especially so as privacy/terrorism laws are getting tighter all the time.

Just passed the BNUC-s Part-1 theory test and hope to take Part-2 after the winter as everything should be ready by then.

I've lost faith in my Phantom 2. It freaked out a while ago and dropped hard, bending the gimbal mounting plate and breaking the ribbon cable for the gopro, then today whilst hovering over a school swimming pool it decided it wanted to head into a tree and ignore the control inputs I was making.

Luckily it didn't land in the pool, or worse, hurt one of the 100 or so onlookers. Instead it buried itself 30 feet up in a tree, gimbal twitching like a fish out of water.

It's a bloody liability, and I can't trust it. No fun anymore. I think I'll get rid of this one and buy another in a few years time when they're more reliable frown

Does the Phantom 2 use 2.4ghz for control? You can get issues with high moisture around pools with 2.4ghz, I wouldn't want to try it

I've passed the first part of my BNUC-S exam a couple of weeks ago, got the Ops Manual to sort out now.

I'm quite tempted by the Inspire - going to wait a while to let them iron bugs out first though!

Jaysus!!!!

All the pilots have come out of the wood work smile.

Is there a good place to start learning about the exam. I live in N.Ireland and they don't hold it that often here so I would really like to get a heads up before I take the plunge.

I'm a bit of a noob really but I have read up on the ANO and try to fly as safely as possible.

Installed the new V3 TX on my P2V+ last night, seems like a nice upgrade for fairly minimal cost.

Gives LiPo battery, battery status LED's, throttle lock and most importantly a tilt wheel control for smooth control of the gimbal. Awesome.

Once you've paid for the exam they send you the literature...everything you will be tested on is in there.

I only got my books a few days before the course and that was enough time, along with the content of the course to be able to pass with no problem.

Make sure you know how to read a map using latitude and longitude. Quite a bit of the test involves this and if you get the location wrong the remaining answers for that section will all be wrong too!

Maybe not where you work. I certainly don't play things like that in the office.
