Dji Phantom UAVs
Discussion
Hi, I fitted the H3-3D to the Phantom 2 today.
On powering it up, the GoPro ends up looking approx 45° down and not quite straight ahead.
Does anyone know if I have to do this thing with shorting out the two terminals on the Zenmuse and then updating the firmware?
If so, I'm guessing I should be using the latest version ("Phantom 2 Assistant Software v3.6") but I'm puzzled by the previous version (v3.4) being available too.
A bit disappointed that it didn't work perfectly first time.

Did you set the gimbal up in the gimbal section of the assistant? Go for v3.6.On powering it up, the GoPro ends up looking approx 45° down and not quite straight ahead.

Out of the box, that's normal operation.On powering it up, the GoPro ends up looking approx 45° down and not quite straight ahead.

You'll need to adjust the gains in the Assistant software. Slide the Horizontal Gain and Vertical Gain to the centre (ie, 0) and you'll have full movement.
Been looking at getting into this but not 100% clear on the regulations. They appear to fall under SAV regulations which means:
1. The person in charge of a small unmanned surveillance aircraft must not fly the aircraft in any of the circumstances described in paragraph (2) except in accordance with a permission issued by the CAA.
2. The circumstances referred to in paragraph (1) are:
a) over or within 150 metres of any congested area;
b) over or within 150 metres of an organised open-air assembly of more than 1,000 persons;
c) within 50 metres of any vessel, vehicle or structure which is not under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft; or
d) subject to paragraphs (3) and (4), within 50 metres of any person.
3. Subject to paragraph (4), during take-off or landing, a small unmanned surveillance aircraft must not be flown within 30 metres of any person.
4. Paragraphs (2)(d) and (3) do not apply to the person in charge of the small unmanned surveillance aircraft or a person under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft.
5. In this article ‘a small unmanned surveillance aircraft’ means a small unmanned aircraft which is equipped to undertake any form of surveillance or data acquisition.
I'm not judging anyone etc but a few of the videos posted dont appear to comply with this, have I misunderstand the legalities or are people:
Ignoring the rules?
Not aware of the rules?
Sought prior permission from the caa?

You do not know what is under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft and as such you don't know if they are none compliant or not in many cases. 1. The person in charge of a small unmanned surveillance aircraft must not fly the aircraft in any of the circumstances described in paragraph (2) except in accordance with a permission issued by the CAA.
2. The circumstances referred to in paragraph (1) are:
a) over or within 150 metres of any congested area;

You need to decide if your own interpretation of the rules allows you to use the drone as you want. Don't worry about everyone else does because it makes no difference to you.

Given the footage I've seen I think its safe to assume a lot of people don't comply. There's a video of a guy flying his quad along blackpool sea front, over people walking, cyclists etc... I think its safe to say he doesn't have control of all those people!You need to decide if your own interpretation of the rules allows you to use the drone as you want. Your point is correct though, other people not complying doesn't make it ok for you not to.
What deals are around now then? I was expecting a glut of them on ebay as the novelty wore off following christmas

Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning? As per my post I'm not judging or stating that people aren't complying as I don't know, I'm merely asking people's opinion. Thanks for sharing yours.You need to decide if your own interpretation of the rules allows you to use the drone as you want. From a CAA perspective, they get really interested if there's any commercial element, however small. Uploading to a YouTube channel that is 'monetized' would be enough. They have gone after a few individuals.
As a hobbyist, I don't have to worry about it. I can't see myself trying to film near any events or public gatherings. I might film in the park, but only if it's not busy. I can just land and pack up if it comes to it.
It would be great to be able to launch and do a bit of filming at something like a PH Sunday Service. At the moment, I don't think it's worth the hassle.
