Is there a law that forbids over 400 feet, or is it that we must notify CAA?

There is more to it than first meets the eye,

FPV Legality

From www.fpvuk.org

Again, going them and benefit from being insured!

However things are getting easier each year:

Nice [+]

I did another test flight yesterday - I've moved up from the "flying squares" exercises to try and fly circles. Still lots of work needed on smoothness. It's not going to beat me though, dammit.

I've had my iOSD mini and connector cable through from firstpersonview.co.uk now, so I'm gonna get that all hooked up later and give FPV a go. Should be interesting - provided the weather stays as it is at the moment.

Got mine through the post today. Will dig the soldering iron out over the next couple of days and get cracking. Hopefully should make FPV easier with some telemetry.

Did you buy the connector cable from them too? If so, no need to solder - just make sure if yours was in the first batch of cables that you act on the e-mails they sent you before you plug it all in!

What is the story with FPV on the phantom 2?

From what I've read so far, it looks like the phantom 2 operates on a different frequency than the v1. Is 5.8 better for video or better for controlling it?

Not sure if I should go for phantom 2 with easy gimbal set up or v1.1.1, save some money and do some soldering. Either way, I want to go FPV eventually.

The Phantom 2 Vision operates on 5.8GHz for the controller and 2.4GHz for the video, so video range is limited to wi-fi ranges generally, but as a benefit other wi-fi signals don't potentially interfere with the control interface, which is an alleged cause of flyaways on other models.

The Phantom 2 (non-Vision, without the build in camera) operates on 2.4GHz for the controller, and then you can get (like me) a 5.8GHz video transmitter (Fat Shark in my case) and do video over that, which with the right antennae should in theory get around a mile of video range.

The mini iOSD came with a cable that was terminated at one end and had four unterminated ends. There is a great video online which shows how to do all the soldering, and even a numpty like me was able to follow it. I needed to update the firmware in the mini iOSD then all was good.

Took it for a test flight and was very impressed, though it is massively windy at the moment which is not helping my panning smoothness.

Thanks. That clears it up. Is 2.4GHz still plenty for giving the controller a decent range?

So this means that the Phantom 2 non vision and the v1.1.1 use the same frequency for the controller. So main difference is plug and play for gimbal and proprietary batteries.

Linky for the video?

I might just pull the trigger on the buzzflyer pack but as I am a licensed Amateur radio operator I am allowed to use higher powered video TXs.

How do you find the screen and video range Matt? Your vids are coming on nicely.

Here's the vid:

The screen is a bit bulky with the sun shade on but not heavy. The range is ok as long as you get a clear line of site to the aerial and you don't do anything stupid like let the battery for the screen run out when you are in the middle of a flight. Only an idiot would do that boxedin

Not really for this particular model, but worth seeing nonetheless :

Oops hehe

How long does the screen battery last roughly? It really seems the best compact setup. keep the vids coming though I suspect there might not be much flying weather over the next while.

I might order the stuff separately as I really want to go for the 600mW TX.

The battery lasts a couple of hours I guess. I don't really monitor it, as the flights are quite short. I need to add it to my "charging regime" before every flight. It's quite annoying having so many different batteries to charge / check.

Was nice to get out and about today, perfect flying weather this morning, absolutely still. I had a nosey at the old water tower at the top of our village by the railway. My panning is getting smoother but I still struggle with the gimbal lever on the back of the controller.
