P.S These photos were taken with the addition of a ND2 and POL filter from http://phantomfilters.bigcartel.com/ . Mate bought them as a gift after I did some filming for him. Huge difference with respect to the props...I can now take pictures with the gimbal pointing up and the props don't interefere. Well worth the money I'd say..

Guys

Sorry for the daft question. Can you move the camera up and down on a DJI3 advance? Or do I need this "gimball" thing?

Thanks,

The DJI 3 comes with a Gimbal. You can move it up and down smile

The Phantom 3 Standard is pretty much the old Vision+ and although it's only £649, the P3 Advanced and Pro are way better machines.

If you can afford the extra £250 for the Advanced I would recommend it. The extra range, reliability, support and HD Live View (Lightbridge) will be well worth it.

Drop me a message if I can help, we're UK DJI Resellers.

Request /opinions please.

Why would I buy a DJI 3 rather than a 3DR Solo (Cost NOT an issue), as my interest is not fun flying, but filming? I love the programmable 'just do it', programmes.. that will get me the footage I want, that DJI just don't do? And far less chance of crashing and/or bad customer service...?

I have a GoPro Black 3+

Assuming 3DR finally release 3D GIMBLE.

Am at a tipping point.

TIA

I guess that would depend on if you're filming as part of your business. If you are you require a CAA license with states you must me in control of you UAV at all time . I believe that programmable or autonomous flying you are not considered to be in control. Fine for a hobbiest but no good if you want to do is as part of your business.

Autonomous flying is completely OK for commercial purposes, provided you have a pilot-in-command within visual line of sight of the UAV and the appropriate permissions (CAA Permission for Aerial Work) and insurance.

Ta for that, I have read all the CAA stuff.

For those that own a DJI 3 (or sell it!) What sort of autonomous flight modes does it offer? Reviews seem to overlook this aspect as (understandably) most are heavily into the flying bit.

If my memory serves me correctly, you're a Scottish chap - where you based? Happy to catch up and you can have a play with my DJI3 A? (depending you're not from Stornoway) hehe drop me a note.

Currently the only autonomous flight modes are auto take off, auto land and return to home.

However they are more modes coming soon, see:

The P3P is a fantastic piece of kit and will not disappoint. As always there are those who have issues with it (and crashes etc) but I've seen very few documented cases where the product was at fault (i.e. where the full detailed flight logs have been made public).

Additional auto-pilot feature such as Waypoint have been announced to be arriving soon (https://twitter.com/DJIGlobal/status/628898525779079172) and there are 3rd party Apps which will soon provide the same features but at additional cost.

On the mainland... I am however almost as far north as Stornaway! A mate and I have been messing about with his Phantom 2..

http://stevecarter.com/kinloch.mov (30 second 'thing' for his mum's B&B)

.. but what I'm liking about the reviews I've read of the 3DR Solo is that it can do all the flying, leaving me to do all the filming.

Have DJI came out and said anything about these "drop outs" that happen to people?

You need to be careful about exactly what happened with these "drop outs" - the vast majority are pilot error. If they rant on and on about how crap DJI are but somehow manage to delete the flight logs then you can be pretty sure it is pilot error and nothing to do with DJI.
