Got the notification this morning that my Mavic has been shipped and will be with me on Wed.
Going to Madeira next Sun I was very happy with the news smile

Shame the extra battery I also ordered won't be shipped at the same time.

Couldn't resist with the Mavic, mines on order - got a Phantom 2 Vision+ sitting there not used for months now will hopefully use this a bit more!

Got a trip to Iceland next year so will be taking it there for sure

Roughly how much does one of those go for second hand? Quite fancy one, but don't know if it would be a five minute wonder, then sit in the study glaring at me smile

A lot to do with it is how much you are into photography, and where you live.

Not much, rural Lincs, and have permission to overfly the neighbours fields.

Had a play with my phantom 3 while up on Skye last weekend. Experienced a problem when it just started flying off without command. Luckily the return home functioned properly. Also managed to fly it into a rock face at about 15 mph. Put new props on it as a precaution and all seems well now.

So after flying Mavic for two days in Madeira:
- I don't know how I feel about narrower field of view. It's cool for flying close to things/people as in I don't have to get as close as I used to with Phantom 3 but in landscape flying I kind of miss wider angle
- battery life is slightly better than Phantom 3, it also charges quickly. Charger has two USB ports built in {2.0Amp total) so handy when travelling.
- controller is small and compact but putting the phone in is a bit of PITA and it feels doing it often might loosen up the socket in your phone. Also you need to take the case off, it doesn't fit in it. I have a spare LG G4 that I'm not using and I think I will leave it in permanently just for flying Mavic. IMO Karma controller is a better setup.
- I DO NOT like the tap to focus business, I missed out on few photos that took me long time to set up because of focus being slightly off. I never had that issue with Phantom 3
- I love the new portrait mode, lens spins 90 degrees and you can film/shoot vertically
- Mavic is just as agile as Phantom 3 apart from gaining altitude. Also Phantom 3 was JUST FAST. Mavic is faster, but you need to change into Sport mode.
- range, video feed and control so far was spot on, much better than Phantom 3 Advanced
- obstacle avoidance works BUT if you are going at full speed YOU WILL HIT things ahead of you. It just doesn't react/stop quickly enough.
- Mavic is quieter than Phantom 3
- I had few times issue with a message "Can't take off" when the drone was doing SOMETHING. it took about 30sec and it was ok afterwards.
- I cannot hand catch land it and it's really a big problem due to how low it is. It really isn't easy sometimes to find a spot flat enough to start and land. When I try to land it and catch it, it freaks out and try to rise when Phantom 3 was very easy to just switch the propellers off.

Do you think the size advantages outweigh what you see as negative points?

Absolutely! The only issue for me with Phantom was its size/shape.
I carried Mavic with me hiking in Madeira all day today. I had a GoPro, Mavic and Sony RX1r and all of them were probably equal to my 5D with one bigger lens.
I posted two photos from today in drone pics.

Great feedback on the Mavic - I have a Phantom Vision 2+ and I am considering the upgrade.

Do you mind answering some question please?

1) How are the pics compared to the 3? Can you share some please?

2) I am particularly interested in the collision sensor and how it functions - I wondered how it responds to being flown close to a wall. Does it act like a virtual barrier? i.e. if you push forward facing the wall, does it just sit there solidly and allow you to fly sideways keeping a safe, steady distance, or will it try to take evasive action? I have had some very challenging assignments where this feature would have been useful and saved me from having to fly in ATTI mode so close to a structure.

3) Does the camera auto focus in Video mode or can it be fixed in a manual focus mode so it acts like the old models?

4) Can you fly and take pictures/ videos through the dome cover? If so does it seriously impact the picture quality, introduce flaring etc.

Sorry for all the questions!

I'm also interested in this 'manual' focussing on the Mavic. If you touch to focus on something and then move towards it, does it 'lock on' and auto focus to stay sharp?

Also, regarding the hand landing, I know nothing about these things (hoping to learn) but I know it can be done. Have a look here (should be in the right place)

Don't ask me how he did it though! biggrin

Hand landing is easy with the Phantom as it has big legs!

I see what he did there, but that will be a lot harder, especially if there is any wind.

As for the vid... STOP DOING THAT with the music compression. It really hurts my ears.

As for the drone, I'll probably still buy one though, as I'm a sucker for this sorta' tech.

ETA Though I'm really waiting for the next phantom... which looks like it'll be epic.

Ok, I figured out how to catch it when landing smile One problem solved!

1) Just as good, I posted two from yesterday in drone pics topic. Honestly, I would have to fly both side by side and take photos to compare in order to say whether they are better or worse but definitely Mavic's photos are very good and most importantly good enough for me.

2) It won't let you fly any closer. I think you can fly sideways. If it follows you you can choose whether you want it to try avoid obstacles sideways or not.

3) There is no continuous autofocus. You need to tap on screen or you can associate one of the buttons to focus in centre.

4) I think so but I don't see the point?
