I think if this is hoped to be a progression/career, then she should start with a DSLR as you suggest (not a mirrorless EVF model). And for £200, yes, a used entry-level would be spot on. Not the latest 'tech' I agree, but photography is not always about the latest tech, it'a about finding/taking/making good photographs - that's what she'll be judged on.

As a Nikonite I can't comment on Canons but would say the Nikon D80 would be a very sound choice. You'll need a lens too of course; to get her started look for the Nikon 18-70mm (the 18-55mm is more numerous and would suffice). The only extras you'll need are a memory card and ideally a spare battery (if you buy s/h these bits and bobs may well be included) Then you can grow the system as her interest/ability grows. Feel free to PM or call if you have any questions.

A nice condition D60 with the kit lens was "chipped" in for £35.00 yesterday at a friends well known shop in London. it will not be sold on as its not worth the shops time .They will just pass it on for the same price to anyone they know .

V8W - thanks. Looks to be a great entry level camera and from reading the EOS M thread on here, folk are happy with it, so it would more than suffice for her needs (and no doubt have more kid friendly wizz bang features). Whilst I know nowt about photography, I would have thought a camera with a view finder is better for someone to learn 'the art'.

Simpo - wavey Thanks for the advice, will keep a look out for deals.

Yes, the D60 is newer than the D80 but pitched a bit lower down the scale. You should also have a PM for another option. That said, a D60 + kit lens for £35 is too good not to get. The remaining £165 can be spent on another lens, or a flashgun, or a tripod + change, or whatever requirement surfaces next.
