Thoughts on this?

Waipara Dawn by Rob Dickinson, on Flickr
For me it's the foreground that's taking the edge off. Maybe it's just too bright? The foreground itself isn't really worth looking at.

Not sure what the answer is; whether a crop would remove some of the foreground and draw the eye to the horizon more, or darkening the foreground, or something else. But for me there's definitely the potential for something really special there - it's got some fantastic ingredients. Love the lighthouse and the corona, love the colours and I like the brightening on the left from the coming dawn. As it is now I think it's a bit marmite though as I've no doubt some will love it.

Cheers everyone, and I agree its not right as it is. Too many elements I think I like the circle theme and I do like the light on the foreground but not sure it is helping the image overall. a work in progress!

One I took of the Velodrome at Stratford. The sharpness of some of the EOS M lenses really impresses me sometimes.

I think you've captured the stillness of the area very well. The third picture taken just above the bridge is lovely.

Were you staying in Shaldon?

For me I like the light from the lighthouse on the right and the lit foreground, its the bright light in the sky on the left that detracts/unbalances it? Obviously hard to avoid if thats where the light is though! I like the circlular flare around the lighthouse and the way the sky and foreground reflect the same semi-circlular shapes.

As others have said you set the bar high with your other work!

Unfortunately not this time - stayed in the premier inn at Newton Abbott, but still managed to catch some time with relatives who live in Teignmouth, and then took a wander over to Shaldon for an hour :-)

we had a great holiday last year in Shaldon - stayed in big house overlooking the bowling green...had a great time

Very nice. Driving this morning I saw a similar scene that looked like it could be great for a photo but I didn't achieve anywhere near the same results.
I'm a very green beginner so constructive criticism welcome

That picture is actually 10 shots stacked in photomatix, tone compressed to taste, then final local adjustments adjusted in Photoshop. There are approx 35 stops of dynamic range in that pic compressed into 8 stops of jpeg range.
Ah I see. Although Ive no idea what any of that means!

But I don't feel so bad about my poor effort. Cheerssmile
