Mark, as someone new to the whole photography/post editing thing, I have a question - would it be possible for you to post that image again but the original unedited one.

So I can see what the editing process can add?

Thanks.

Yes and no. I shoot in raw only, so to make a photo it has to be processed to a lesser or greater extent. I can set the adjustments back to zero to give you an idea of how it was processed but some decisions will have already been applied by the processing software I use. I'm home tonight and will sort it.

Here it is, no mods other than the generic turning it into a photo stuff needed for a raw file, other than that all adjustments set to zero.

So.. the next obvious question is how and with what (software)?
I guess a layer for shadows, one for highlights, one to boost the saturation of the sunset and one to sharpen (a little too much for may taste I'm afraid).

Please share if it doesn't give away any trade secrets biggrin

The small images Flickr uses do tend to look a little over sharpened.

In Capture One Pro 8 - White balance, split for the sky and the foreground. Some shadow recovery on the headland to the left. A touch of saturation. Some clarity to the foreground. Lens corrections.

Into CS6, then Nik Color Efex. Some detail extractor on the sky, some pro contrast to the foreground, some cast correction to the sky. Noise reduction to the sky. Dust spotting. A final touch of contrast and a tiny bit of local sharpening but not much.
