It really is, took me by surprise.
the whole Death Valley area is pretty amazing, looking over Badwater Basin watching the sun go down was an experience.

I hope you hung around until it got dark, it's 2nd top of my list of real "dark" places in the world for seeing the Milky Way etc...only 2nd to the mountain tops in Hawaii...
