I bought a manual 85mm f/1.5 len from Russia a few months ago. Took forever to get delivered but I had my first shoot with it. Wide open it's a bit of a nightmare to get in focus but the bokeh... oh the bokeh!

Very interesting but I was always led to believe that "donut" bokeh was not terribly desirable.

For me, as a personal view, it's not generally appealing and tends to distract from the image. However if others see things differently that's fine by me and I am more than willing to enjoy such a result in an appropriate context.

My wife has decided that she is entirely delighted with the performance of the main camera on her Samsung S3 phone. Who am I to argue that deep saturation, high contrast and extreme DoF are not always the ideal assessment criteria?

Bokeh does not seem to come into consideration anywhere in her world.

One of the best - to my mind; favourite - set of photos I have ever taken was of a field of poppies with a mirror lens, especially because of the out of focus areas. So much so that I bought a mirror lens earlier this year to try to replicate that!
It tends to produce a rather "busy" look.

Such a look can work in the right circumstances.
