Rule number 1 - DO NOT upload photos using Thumbsnap! They're from 5DS but look like taken with an iPhone 4 due to compression.Or make sure that you remind people to click through twice to see the full glory!
They are somewhat excellently detailed at that point.

I was asked by a friend recently to take some photos of his horses, I have to say this is one of the most difficult subjects I've ever shot, bloody things have a mind of their own! C&C please.

Some interesting shots there, Mike. There's a pronounced wide-angle effect especially in the first two, was that deliberate? If the owner of the horses was happy with the pictures, that's the deciding factor.
Thanks, the wide angle was deliberate as I wanted to be close to the horses but still place them in the countryside around them. Also I was using a little bit of off camera flash to try and get some more definition into their coats. The owner will get to see these tonight so I'll know more about how pleased be is then.Slightly annoyingly the lighter coloured horse was the one he particularly wanted some really good shots of but the damn horse wouldn't leave me alone (even with the owners help) so it was really difficult to get anything. Still it was a good learning experience and I'll probably have another go with them soon.

Any reason why you didn't use a slightly shallower DoF?
Mainly because the horses (and I) were moving around quite a lot so I was using f8 as a bit of a safety margin on focusing. Hopefully next time I go up there they will be a bit more relaxed and less interested in me and I'll be able to shoot wider apertures.theboss said:
I was lucky enough to be in Southern Utah with a 5DS a few months ago. I haven't been through them all in detail yet but here are a few snaps. I have a 14 x 50MP pano of Bryce Canyon to stitch together!
Thanks for posting. They were fascinating. On the one quoted above, am I the only one concerned about the domino effect?
Thanks again.

Decent effort. How come you were shooting at ISO 12800 though? It's pretty noisy for a daytime shot (even allowing for dark shaded woods.)Lets see if this works, long time lurker on the forum, just got into photography this summer, messing around with a macro lens up my local woods

Welcome Gavin There's a dedicated macro thread if that's your bag - we're generally a helpful bunch so ask away if there are any questions or post what you have got and ask for feedback.Lets see if this works, long time lurker on the forum, just got into photography this summer, messing around with a macro lens up my local woods
Re the shot above - a couple of observations: reckon you could have got a bit closer to show more detail in the pine cone and maybe try shooting with the flash rather than mega iso? Most macro togs use a diffused flash and something like f16, 1/200, iso 100.
A couple from my recent trip to Utah. What an amazing place, the more you travel the more vast and extraordinary the scenery becomes.
