This one highlights how the social networks can differ according to the type of your photography. For Rob's landscape images, I'd agree that Facebook business pages are now 'broken' and offer little value. If you're into social photography though, it still works if you can tag the client (or get them to tag themselves) in the image. You can then get a mini viral effect through their friends - you can't beat free publicity like that!
That's not what I had in mind. I meant more that for little money you can for example show your photo to : United States>New York>Between 21-55>main language English>working for New York Times etc etc. This is the true strength of Facebook business pages for me.

And I believe good Facebook is good for your SEO too. I haven't touched my work website for over a year now. It should be sliding down Google ranking like crazy after such a long time of not optimising it. I only make sure my work facebook is very active, I post photos daily, there's always 500+ people "talking about it", around 5000 genuine likes etc. And my website is constantly number 1 or 2 for all keywords I'm interested in! There must be a connection, before I started putting effort in Facebook I had to constantly optimise the website.

Good to hear that the focused FB promotions work for you. It really is a matter of finding what works for you and your business. There certainly isn't a one size fits all solution smile

Flickr seems to be ditching its ability to allow you to sign in using Facebook and Google accounts with irks be a little, now I have to go through the bother of creating a Yahoo! account which wont get used for anything but Flickr.

Created a 500px account this morning and so far I do like how it looks and feels. Something I don't quite get though is views etc. I've only uploaded a few photo's so far - two batches a couple of minutes apart. The first lot took off and got 200-300 views in the course of a couple of hours, with a few being 'popular' etc. The second lot are completely unviewed. All have categories, a few tags etc. Any idea why theres a disparity between the two batches?

I have no idea of how to link photo's from 500px but my profile is here if anyone can see an obvious difference between the two batches:

For 2 comparisons, Side Pike has a pulse just over 90 right now but the Haweswater shot is unviewed.

500px is a very odd website.. after initial views and favs moments after uploading normally you get nothing.. It tends to be a popularity contest with people just fav-ing loads of pics so their own photos get some hits..

Yes, this is what I don't like about many sites. They only leave a comment or 'like' your images because they want something back. It's not necessarily because they like your image. But I guess this is the nature of these sites. But 'popular' images on 500px are actually fantastic, so I do like this site more than others.

So I am actually members of both flickr, YouPic and 500px. I agree with the first comment that Flickr is self destructive. Seeems like a big bucket of bad stuff. 500px I use to sell photos but it never get to many dollars, yet I enjoy it. YouPic is actually quite addictive specially if you have many photos in there. I get many views fast and I get very detailed feedback. Seem more concentrated round phtotography.

For me YouPic is the obvious choice ...
