I dont understand PS...

What dont grasp is the wide range (it seems) of versions

Lightroom? Element? 6 7 8 9 ......

are they just increased cost wise or do they do much different for 10 times the price?

Lightroom is not Photoshop.

Elements is a stripped down, cheaper version of Photoshop. It does all the basics but is a more commercial product missing tools and features a pro user may not be able to do without. For home use, Its perfect.

All the numbers are just new versions. New versions have new features.. Its not hard to understand.

I was going to agree until a swift Google found 'Adobe Photoshop Lightroom':

I use CS2. It works. Not broke therefore ain't gonna fix it.

Hmmm I imagine the Photoshop bit in the name is solely for marketing purposes only... Lightroom in any form is not Photoshop.

Until around a year ago I still used cs3. I now use cs5. The only thing I find beneficial in cs5 over cs3 is the tab based system for having multiple images open. Couldn't do without it now. Everything else is much the same for my uses.

If Lightroom would have Content Aware fill, I would never need Photoshop...

What do you want to do with Photoshop?

Manage you library and do bit of editing across the whole image? -> Lightroom
Really manipulate an image to perfection or add/remove things from images? -> Elements
Based on your question full fat Photoshop will be overkill and more difficult to learn.
