Your brief simply suggests a point and shoot affair. Huge selection of good stuff in the £100-150 range.

Things like the Panasonic Lumix or Sony Cybershot should be on your shortlist. Most big supermarkets sell them if you want to have a look and feel.

I wouldn't spend more than c.£150 though.

Being 70, he might like something retro like the Pentax MX-1?

Failing that, the Sony RX100 or something along the lines of a Lumix LX-7 or Olympus XZ-2. The Stylus1 is supposed to be very good but maybe a bit over budget?

How is their dexterity? I'd normally suggest a Canon S1** (whatever the latest is now) but a G15/16 might be a better bet as it has a slightly larger body.

Come on lads. I'm 68 this year and can successfully hand-hold a Canon 1D with a 300mm F2.8 attached (and frequently do)! Us old gits like modern technology the same as everyone else. I'd be lost without my DSLRs; and the scope and flexibility that they bring me.

The age of the recipient (IMHO), is beside the point. It's what they want from the equipment that's most important. If someone with a "limited" budget asked me what I wanted (if I hadn't any gear); I'd opt for a S/H DSLR with a nifty-fifty on it!

Now; it's time for me tablets ...

Was talking last week to a friend of mine. An 'old' bloke, just pushing 70, about cameras, and cars.

He was just off to Japan to complete a multi billion pound deal with Yamaha for a car he's just designed. Wonder if he can manage a camera? wink

O/P... age is irrelevant. I know lots of stupid young people.

To bring s bit of balance here.

My folks are 60 and are utterly, utterly useless with any technology. They never used it for work so It's alien still.

Lets be a bit more inclusive in our views eh! Runs smile

Quite. There are useless old and useless young. Age shouldn't be an issue. It *was* an issue in the thread title. £300 compact camera for hopeless non-techie folk would have been fine wink

But Gordon I'm making an assumption here is a truly exceptional talent ( and as you know, a very nice guy).
