Pictures paint a thousand words...It's called a "Stirnpanzer" and is a bit of a rarity. Produced as a sniper shield. Only available for about 5% of the standard helmets produced, it was extra armour for the frontal area of the helmet, and at 1.2kg, it more than doubled the weight of the helmet. As Hugo has said, often issued to sentries and machine gun crews, etc, in 'static' roles in the trenches. Not really suitable for use by advancing infantry due to the extra weight.
