The lay-bys of Hampshire, fantastic? confused
Either your eyes don't work, or I'm due a parrot. I thought a pair of Challenger CRARRVs with a Police escort, pulling out onto the road might be fantastic, to some at least.

If they're too boring "right-way-up", then try this...

from here... http://www.scoobynet.com/non-scooby-related-4/5155... ...with more pictures, too.

It was always fun seeing the new lads making new lay-bys on the lanes and roads of Hampshire when their driver training went a bit screwy.

I'd imagine that it wasn't chained down properly. That and a bit to much speed on a roundabout would be enough.

I very nearly wiped a Volvo out on my Chieftain course at Bovington.

1990 it was, before the concrete motorway within the training area, and we used to drive circuits in the Chieftain GTi 'wedges' (tanks with the turrets removed, and weighing a good 10 to 15 tonnes less, hence the GTi tag).

I was heading downhill toward the left turn near Clouds Hill, when I kicked down the gearbox to give myself some steering. Only the engine revs were too high, and the 'box won't kick down to protect itself. When I hauled on the left hand steering lever, next to nothing happened, and the poor 'Yummy Mummy' with a car-load of kids, sat waiting to turn right, she must have wet herself, with a Chieftain tank bearing down on her, and stubbornly refusing to steer! I got myself together and stood on the (big) brake pedal with both feet, bringing this clanking hulk to a stop about 2 metres from her door. Which was when the instructor/commander leaned forward and scudded me on the head with something heavy. Thankfully I had a helmet on, because he really meant it... smash

Oh, and photographs. This thread is about photographs?

Whoops! The blue New Holland has tipped his tanker trailer, somehow. The red Case, towing the crop-sprayer, has turned up to help. The contents of the tanker are flowing away down the hill, there's hydraulic fluid leaking from hoses on the back of the tractor, and crap everywhere. No one is hurt, and the two drivers are setting about hooking up strops to try to right the thing.

Fantastic? Probably not, if you were needing to use the Crondall to Well road this afternoon. I was OK, I walked my bike past the scene.

The driver who gave me the finger and roared off when I tried to flag him down to warn him? I hope he didn't drive into the tractor, but the way he was hooning about the place, I wouldn't be surprised.

Hahaha.

I never worked on the Chieftain, I went through Bordon end of 1990 and were straight onto Challys.

Did it have the same emergency brake system? If there was an issue it would slam down the gearbox without any warning which usually ended up with the driver sporting a broken nose.

I sat in a tank once. Possibly. Or, was it a submarine?

Running the canal at night, in the pitch black, was not amusing.

The driver of the blue tractor, assume he was a young buck, wearing rigger boots, branded overall tided by the arms at the waist, college/YFC rugby/polo short with collar turned up, Oakely shades and mobile phone glued to ear?

He forgot to hitch the pickup hitch up properly, the weight shifted and the bowser and tractor parted company.

REME, then? They must have still been teaching Chieftain back then, though? I was an Armoured Engineer (Class 3) and we ran Chieftain for an age after Challenger entered service. In Gulf 1 we could never keep up with Chally/Warrior battlegroups in our pure 1960s tech Chieftain/432 fleet. Hell, 32 Armd Engr Regt even took Centurion AVREs to war in 90/91, and they were a 1940s design. I don't recall ever experiencing the emergency brake situation you describe, though it may have been a 'thing'. I got out of Armour 23 years ago and only a few specific incidents remain 'unfuzzy' in the memory.

As a fully qualified REME cadet @ 14 years old, I can state, without any quibbling, he screwed-up a tad.

Gone, but never forgotten.

ETA: As I typed the phrase, "Gone but never forgotten, A Luton Town striker scored a goal in a live game that's currently on SKY. As he wheeled away in celebration, he hoisted his shirt to reveal a t shirt underneath. On that t shirt was printed a photo and the phrase, "Gone, but never forgotten".

Spooky.
