There's not actually much difference there. That house has been pulled down, there's the 'land' missing of course, and there's a big radio mast at the top of the hill.Have a search for the 'then and now' shots of Sunset Boulevard, Beverly Hills and Bel Air - those are lot more dramatic.

At the very top of N Beechwood Drive theres a horse riding place. I'm not a horse rider but it was good fun riding around the hills, as the area around the hills (Griffith Park) is beautiful, and you get a view of the whole city below you. Great photo op. You can also take the obligatory sign photo there.
Griffith Park Observatory - Good fun for older kids inside, again, a great view of the city. Only had my point and shoot with me so missed a photo of eagles floating in front of me as they picked up the hot wind blowing up the hill.
If you're into spotting things from films, the cowboy scenes from Mulholland Drive were filmed at the Ranch, and loads of films have included scenes shot outside the Observatory, including a couple of Terminator films.

I think this is the spot: https://www.google.nl/maps/@34.128629,-118.323209,...
That damned tree is in the way now though.

I suspect the "Official" viewing area may be the likeliest place for the original as it's about the only place with the road shape and open space on the left and the angle for the sign looks about right. That damned tree is in the way now though.
However the house in the original looks similar to the one that can be seen from there but is not in the right place.
Is there anything to suggest that the original as posted is from a one-shot negative? There is every chance that the it could be a composite - we are talking Hollywood after all - not know for documentary work as far as I know.
The alternative would seem to be that as part of the obviously extensive building work that has taken place over the decades one heck of a lot of earth and rock has been moved for major re-landscaping.
Of the shot was taken from somewhere else not easy to ID from Street View.
Fascinating (in an anorakish sort of way) investigation.

Apologies, that's Pulpit Rock at Portland Bill. Cool picture though, any more info?
Jack Davies photographed professional trial bike riders Jack Gear, Andrei Burton and Joe Seddon testing their skills off Weymouth. So said the Telegraph.
I'm struggling to work out how that height can be achieved on that rock structure.
