What is wrong with lightening the top of the planet a little, it would put the earth closer to Mars and make it easier to get to.

Brilliant

Is there no risk of everyone in the picture falling through the ice if the holes weaken it enough?

I'm sure the organisers have thought of it though and wouldn't carry on if there was a risk

How long before someone raises the idea of drilling to the centre of the earth and using the energy to propel ourselves into a new orbit?

I guess they must to a certain extent, but I also imagine the organisers have worked out how far apart they have to be given how thick the ice is so there's no real danger.

Reminds me of a HG Wells story where the Boston Gun Club plan to fire the worlds biggest cannon (100ft bore?) to turn the earth on it's axis to improve the climate at the north pole.
