Many people will zoom instead of getting closer. Or get closer when they should be zooming.
I think the approach should be to get to the right distance to get the perspective you want, then use the zoom to frame to composition you want. It's so instinctive I never thought about it until now.

I know very well how focal length affects the photo but I still don't see it as a "zoom misuse". They see what the photo will look like. It's not like shooting everything at one length is "the right way".
If somebody even knows about the distortion caused by focal length, I'm sure they are perfectly capable of applying all the other settings correctly. Buying, carrying and changing prime lenses while taking photos is much more of a problem and something impossible to expect from somebody who doesn't fully know what they are doing than using a zoom lens.
(and that's from somebody who shoots pretty much everything with a fisheye and a prime!smile)

Anyway... Back on topic.

So is the Currys promotion over?
How good is IQ comparing to Sony Rx100 III?
I can do some side by sides if you like? Just from playing with them both this week I would say there isn't much in it. Although it's weird that the point 'n shoot has the EVF! I'm already a convert to touch screens though - All cameras should have them. Not much in it size wise.

Oh and I ended up getting mine from Argos for £199. Not quite as cheap as curry's but the curry's was open box with bits missing.

That would be AMAZING!!! Ideally with a 22m lens because that's what I'd buy

Also, can you have Auto ISO in Manual mode?

Is the argos £200 instore only? I can only find it for £230 on the net! This looks perfect for me with the 22mm.

Correct, but I've seen many inexperienced photographers miss the first step (get the perspective right). They just see an interesting subject, zoom until it's roughly in the frame and then shoot. While a prime does limit them to one perspective it is helpful in teaching them to think and move.

I guess my point was mainly that beginners get too hung up with settings and don't spend enough time thinking about composition. Focal length will be just another distraction for them.

My 22m f/2.0 pancake lens arrived today (£75 new from e-bay). Am mighty impressed with this little lens, it really is a must have if you've got this camera! Sharp even when wide open (and really sharp when stopped down), just not the creamiest bokeh but hey, you can't have everything smile

Off on holiday tomorrow but will definitely order when I get back. Like how compact the whole unit becomes with it on too!

OK, no problem I'll get a few shots at the weekend.

The little EOS M seems to happily AF with the 70-200 f2.8L and 2x extender biggrin

So how is everyone getting on with their EOS M's ?

I've still got mine sitting here in the box unopened as I am undecided about keeping it. I was all set to go buy a DSLR when this popped up on the radar and I snapped one up at Currys however I'm unsure whether to stick with it or go with my original plan and get the Nikon D7000 (admittedly at over 3 times the price!)

Do you find the AF frustrating?

I've had a play with mine, very pleased with it.

I am taking a few chaps to Saltwick Bay in the morning and might give it a run out, see how it fares.

Really liking mine and the AF is more than up to the job for my needs from this camera. If you're considering it instead of a DSLR I'd think carefully about what you plan to be photographing. If you want to do a lot of sports/action then I suspect you might well be frustrated with the AF.

I tried out the 22mm lens with some pics of our cat. Am so loving this little lens!
