I have ditched my RX100 and a whole swathe of Canon APS-C lenses (just left with a 70D + portrait lens) so I can move to a lighter system for holidays and regular use. Quite tempted to get an EOS-M and 22mm pancake because it's cheap enough (£300) - appreciate the focusing isn't as fast as with newer DSLRs - but any reason why this would be a bad choice, primarily as I do like low-light capability which is a weak point of most compacts. Also does anyone have an EOS-M2 (and where did you buy it?)

Apart from the slow AF there's nothing itinerantly wrong with it, it's just Canon were late to the CSC game and everyone else seems to be doing a better job of it. If it was my money I would be looking at a Fuji X-E1 which can be had for £365 with an 18mm lens - http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/fuji-x-e1-with-18m...

Or buy the X-E1 with the 18-55 bundled lens and qualify for a free 50-230mm zoom, current Fuji promotion,

I like the M, not played with one since the firmware update.

Quality was good and the range of lenses is fine now .

Thanks all. Ok, think I've decided on a second-hand EOS-M and upgrade (to M2/M£) if the need/availability arises. I like the Fuji but can see myself getting carried away with it. What I want is a 'disposable' camera and the M is familiar to a Canon user.

I was under the impression that the AF was unusably slow on the EOS-M.

The Fuji's seem to be leading the game at the moment in this sector.

Far better mirrorless systems out there than the poor attempt Canon have shown. Have a look at Micro 4/3 instead for a massive range of bodies and lenses.

I think the Panasonic GM1 is the best of the small CSCs.

I went for the EOS-M and 22mm f2 (second hand).. should be playing with it tomorrow!

Will see how bad the auto-focus is after a firmware update but for the amount spent i'm not expecting a lot.

From experience, just make sure you have spare batteries - the standard Canon battery is good for about 190-210 shots. The constant rear screen chews a fair amount of juice. After market batteries fair worse.

The auto-focus isn't too bad although slower than my G15, the picture quality more than makes up for it. Good choice with the 22mm f/2. Another good ef-m lens is the 11-22mm but the downside to that is the cost.

Just as an update - really pleased with the camera. It's a lot snappier with the firmware and the image quality is superb.

Macro shot taken with the 22mm.

Cropped.

Just an additional note on battery life for CSC cameras. On my NEX-6 I have noted that the EVF seems to eat more juice than the rear screen, but the biggest chewer of battery seems to be the AF + Optical IS in te lenses. Since I have been using a fully manual lens on mine with an adapter the battery lasts for blummin ages!

Thanks for the heads up! I'd been tempted by one of these for quite a while and that is a bargain price.

That is incredible, especially with all the EOS lenses you can get on ebay.

Is there anything comparable?

Not new. Though I think DigitalRev do a good price on the 22mm kit (which costs a fair bit more than a 18-55).

I got someone's holiday wishlist (EOS-M + 22mm + Canon wrist-strap + Lowepro case) for £250. Have a feeling the M3 will arrive later this year hence the price falls. In which case they'll be some eBay bargains to be had.

Mine arrived from Argos this morning (the £199.99 kit of EOS M + 18-55mm + 90EX flash). All feels very well made and the auto focus is a lot quicker than I was expecting. Not quite sure why it's kept that bad reputation for slow AF after the firmware update. It's not as fast as a 5D mk iii with a 70-200 L lens, but it's certainly no slouch. The kit lens is a bit soft wide open, but quickly sharpens up when stopped down. Only taken a few test shots, but am liking it so far. Certainly seems to fill the gap in terms of size vs image quality between my S95 and the 5D's I have for work.

I think the 22mm f/2.0 pancake lens will be making it's way onto my wishlist very soon smile

It's a massively underrated camera. The 3 EF-M lenses available are well made and optically very, very good (11-22mm Ultra-wide and 22mm pancake are exceptional) and the kit 18-55mm is a cut above the usual supplied kit lens. The EF adapter is also another good investment if you want to 'play' a little with the camera and your other lenses (as an aside, some functions of Tamron lenses ie VC and AF won't work or register on the M - the SP 17-50 Di II VC is an example).

Oh, and it's fully compatable with the ST-E3 / 600EX-RT set up's for those who like to play with their off camera flash.

I echo all that. I'm a long term Canon DSLR user with a couple of Canon bodies and a bag full of lenses. I've had my M with EF-M 18-55, EF-M 22/2 and EF convertor for 6 months now and except when I'm going out specifically to shoot action - my 7D doesn't see the light of day.

It's a real shame that it got such a bad reputation for the perceived shortcomings of the AF speed - entirely as a consequence of people who'd never used it regurgitating what they've read on internet forums. It's not an action camera but for anything else it's great and I really like the touch screen focusing. The only thing that I don't like is the way the AF hunts in very low light.

I really hope that Canon continue to invest in this format with more lenses and progressively better bodies - as above the current EF-M lenses are great both optically and in build quality - much nicer than the high end EF-S lenses which despite being excellent optically are shockingly plasticy for what they cost.

I thought I'd have one at that money but they seem to be all out of stock.
