You'd be surprised, car manufacturers pay very similar rates to magazines for their press release images.
You are correct in thinking that images that require a studio or for advertising campaigns do command a higher day rate.

When we take our products at work to the studio it's £110 an hour, and then £50 an hour for post production work.

Similar prices for on location shoots as well.

He is the guy who does all the photography for Autoglym.
