Anyone use screen protectors? One day into ownership and a stray bit of sand in my dry bag has scratched the screen. Case might need to be bought ASAP.

Sony screens are very soft.

I learned the hard way way on my old RX100 Mk1. I got two long hairline scratches on the screen because I put it in my pocket after a morning at the beach and a couple of grains of sand did the damage!

I now use those stick on hard glass screen protectors on mine now from day one and they are great. No more worries!

I buy the Larmor 'optical glass' ones off ebay and find them excellent.

I use a small manfrotto soft case for mine, perfect for for the RX100 all models:

Thanks, have just ordered one of those protectors. I'm glad someone else fell foul of a few grains of sand, I was so pissed off when I saw it!

Will try a few cases in the week.

Well....

I went into Jessops to look at the Sony RX100 and the Panasonic TZ60. The zoom on the Sony is very poor. and the TZ60was excellent. The salesman did say the TZ60 and the RX100 were good contenders. Should i really buy an RX100 with such a poor zoom.

Horses for courses! If you're going to buy the Sony buy it tomorrow for the £50 cash back from Sony.... I will admit I'm a bit underwhelmed with the zoom coming from a super zoom Lumix!

The zoom on my x100s is even worst! That aside I've not used to an rx100 but everyone I know who has claims it's the second coming. Worst case scenario is that you are going to have to use your legs or be a little more creative. In terms of image quality Sony are going to be top drawer, they now make the sensors for pretty much everything apart from canon. And there sensors are much much better than canons at the moment.

Have a look at a grey import. Massive discounts and savings to be had.

What size memory cards would you people go for, and do I need Class 10 for mainly stills?
I have a 16gb sandisk extreme in mine... never had an issue or run out of space.
In order to shoot with the new high quality x-avcs video codec (MK 3 only) you'll need a card at least 64gb in size. I just bought a 128gb card for £32 so no problem.

Which shows how poor most Jessops staff are in understanding their products!

There really is no comparison in image quality between the two cameras. But then they are aimed at different markets. If you really need the zoom range of a superzoom then the rx100 won't cut it. But you have to sacrifice so much in order to get that zoom range in terms of optical quality. The TZ60 is f3.5 at the wide end! So this slow lense combined with small sensor size and poor ISO performance makes it pretty much useless in low light without flash.

Hopefully not too off topic..

If i were coming from a Lumix LX3 would i see an improvement overall if i went for an RX100 mk2? (the images i have seen suggest it would be a definite step up even to a mk1) The price diff to a RX100 mk3 pushes it to far for me although buying the "older" model feels a little wrong too!

The previous post compares the longer lens TZ's and i bought the LX3 as i wanted outdoor/landscape/general/ people use not 72x zoom!

Thanks
Chris

All the reviews I've read say Mk 1 or Mk 3... 2 was not much of an upgrade (which is why I didn't upgrade to 2 when it came out, but will do soon to 3).

Today's snap from a Mk 1

I bought my missus a Leica Digital compact.

I know it's basically a Panasonic but every time she uses it she is happy.

Okay I give in, I've ordered a mk3, after seeing some of the images posted and after a couple of missed opportunities recently when I hadn't brought a DSLR due to size and weight, this looks like the solution.

You know it makes sense.

My MKI has been on holiday with us, on days out with friends and our kids - all places where I certainly wouldn't be bothered to carry a DSLR around my neck as well as my daughter.

Yes, the DSLR photos are better. More so in low light. Not always though because the 'clever' settings in the RX100 are actually very good for pointing and snapping. But there's no point in pining over a picture you are 'only' 95% happy with where the alternative is you would never have got it at all.
