Does anyone have a company they can recommend for video transfer?
I have a dozen or so tapes full of the standard family nostalgia type stuff and at the weekend I attempted to begin transferring via the 10 year old DV video camera - unfortunately the playback is interrupted / camera making a grinding noise. And I don't have a firewire port on my new-ish PC set up.
so, it's got to be easier to find a professional service??
Any ideas / help appreciated!

You're in Essex so possibly not too far away but I used to work for Forest Photographic Co Ltd in Walthamstow. Regardless, they'll be happy for you to send them to them and post back out. We used to offer the services you require (basically any form of video onto DVD or whatever etc.

I've not worked there for a good few years now so it's possible they no longer offer the service but worth giving them a call anyway. They're mega helpful and will probably know someone who can do it if they don't any more.

Checked their website and they do indeed still do them. Worth giving them a call on multiple tapes though. IIRC the charge was based on hours of footage rather than number of tapes, but still, call them.

plenty of these sort of services about all relativley similar price, I used these guys to get some reel to reel tapes recovered. Fast service.

I am a freelance editor myself, work is a bit sparse at the mo so
If you were willing to post them to me I would send you the files back on data dvd for £5 a tape, I know im a complete stranger but it might save you some dosh.
