In my opinion, this is totally due to composition and focal point as I mentioned in my earlier post. It would be difficult to 'save' them even in post processing.

If you want to pop your favourite raw file on Dropbox I am sure some of us are happy to have a run at it in post, see what we can do. If nothing else it will be an interesting exercise as 10 different photographers will give 10 different results based on their own styles and preferences.

How do I do that? I have dropbox but don't really use it, do i just upload it and then share the file or something?

Morbid, I love what you've done to those photos added so much more interest in the colours

Glad you like them I thought these shots had good focal points (agree with Gemm that this is lacking in some of the other ones you posted). Have higher res versions if you want them?

Sorry, I didn't go into details before (I was in a hurry!). I thought the boat one did have the potential. Yes, the focal points are there but I thought they were in the wrong place. Composition just didn't work for me - 2 strong subjects both placed right in the middle. I know you don't always stick to rules all the time but I thought the rules of thirds would definitely have worked with this one. Sometimes, you need to move a bit (even if it means you are going to get wet!).

Yeah, rule of thirds may have worked better for the boat shot. It's a rule I often break, possibly because I have been taking photos for years but have only known about it for a little while. Get home and think should have used RoT. OP it is worth researching if you don't know about it, then worth remembering as well !!

I've been snapping for years but am now trying to get a bit more serious. Seeing the quality of so many pictures here give me a real desire to improve. I'm currently doing a photography course and am hopefully learning more each week.

These were taken last night on the edge of Dartmoor. Any comments welcome.

Composition.

You may love or hate mine, But just pointing a camera at a sunset won't work most of the time.

IMHO of course.

Fair comment, thanks. There's no point my being sensitive if I want to learn!

That comment is well worth my time.

If you drive up the M6 and stop to take a pic as the sun goes down, you'll get shed loads like yours. If you want to express some feeling about how you feel when the sun goes down, you'll need something more to the photo than 'I happened to be there'. Foreground interest usually works... silhouettes etc. Location is everything, reflections a bonus. The more you get into a sunset, the better. Setting sun just ain't enough!

Like a good sunset, eaier when you have a week on a desert island to wait for a good one though.

A couple from my local beach, straight out of the camera, I should probably learn how to process pictures properly
