Thanks for those comments, Rich. It sounds like you and I have very similar thoughts.i have been looking for ages at upgrading to a 70D but I have been asking myself what does the 70D give me that I'm not happy with in my 450D. The answer, I think, for £600, is not much, whereas I would carry a compact more and, with a young daughter, that option appeals. The 450D will still go out with me when I plan to take photos and would still be the main camera for quality, although I would hope the RX100iii would not be far behind. Indeed, it could be equal given it is 6 years newer.

The bonus is I have a £500 long service award to spend on a new toy so the mk3 appeals as I can get that from Panamoz for £522.

Sounds it was just the wrong camera for your needs. The RX100 is not a DSLR replacement, it is the best camera that you can fit in a pocket. If fitting it in a pocket isn't important then you don't need an RX100!
Exactly - and my RX100m3 shots are generally better than my mates Nex7! Although to be fair the Nex7 is pretty long in the tooth now.

I love my new 70D it is an amazing SLR, a hugh upgrade from a 450D imo and now the price has come down a bit great value
body only £600 (yes a gray, but who cares, it's UK shipped and hdew have a great rep.

if you are shooting your kids you will just have many more shots in focus with a 70D

And just how many will leave these cameras on "Smart auto" and never dive into the menu to go into Aperture mode etc ? It was a great camera . But what next guys..." A camera for this a camera for that "? they are not "handbags' ! Most of the NEX 7 issues are down to the kit lens . Stick some nice glass onto it and it performs better than a M9 thats for sure. With the Mk1 Sigma 30mm the balance is great and "DP" comments on this combination have it walking over even most Leica lens .

Like cars. Some will just want , buy and never really use. The "ownership and validation" is what they want . Today i will visit a very well know London camera specialist and most there will be pouring out about how good this is that is and how much it cost. Yet 99% of their pics are crap and even worse.
Gear is almost nothing these days . I could walk out with a OM1 and a few rolls and still be happy .One guy says that a HUGE % of "Autocar" pics are from iPhones etc .

My point ...is just how many just want to "purchase " the latest trendy camera to own ? they feel the need etc !

Tonight i watched a well know photographer in his field use a Canon G12 . great camera etc. he is happy to use it. been a "latest gear junky" is not important to him . His pics will be published and he will earn from them (Not much ...but hey !)

and using a viewfinder is like the old "records V MP3" debate .
Erm, No it isn't...

Records V MP3 are very different ways of storing audio with Pros and Cons for each, much like 35mm Film Vs Digital sensors.

A much better analogy would be saying using a Viewfinder or Screen was much like preferring to listen to music at home via Headphones or Speakers. It is simply a method of observing what data is being collected/been collected, it doesn't affect the quality of the finished photo.

I have the RX100M3 so have use of a Viewfinder, and have tried to get into using it, but just can't, even though I have used the viewfinder on a Nikon DSLR for years (although much less recently).

For me, having a screen that tilts up and down has been a massively useful thing. I can hold the camera up the the air above a crowd or fence and see what I'm framing, or conversely when I've sat the camera low down on the ground or on a low wall I tip the screen up and can once again easily see the screen rather than going through a comedy motion of pressing my head on the ground to see through a viewfinder...

But each to their own!

I think view finder use will very much be phased out as time goes on. Younger generations are so used to just using a screen to compose and take pictures, they will never get used to the idea of having to hold the camera to their face to do the same when there is a nice big screen on the back that can do the same.

I'm only 29 but grew up with film cameras and got into photography using manual film SLRs. I much prefer using a view finder over a screen but I see the benefit and will use a screen when it's suitable, but 95% of my photography is through the viewfinder.

I don't think many here do. If we did we'd all have NEX7s with Sigma lenses. I've heard its the best combination ever made for anything...

I picked up an RX100III a few weeks ago in HK. Cracking little camera it's fair to say, but I find the EVF almost unusable. Oh the resolution is OK, and there is minimal lag - it's just that both the body of the camera, and the viewfinder itself are way too small to me.

Looking into the EVF is like squinting through a keyhole, and the camera feels too small when held to the eye.

The Fuji XT1 on the other hand seems as natural as can be to use "conventionally". As does the X100T to that point. On both I prefer the use of the viewfinder to the rear screen.

My little RX100 mk 1 has paid for itslf about 10 times over. The well worn saying that the best camera in the world is the one you have with you fits the bill, as I (literally) never leave home without it, as it lives in my pocket.

Here's a shot from yesterday:

..and here's an example of one that I only got as the camera was in my pocket. I was walking the dog in really overcast dull conditions, and sudenly there was a break in the clouds.

Fantastic pictures, I agree I have a RX100 M2, as a small camera to stick in a pocket it is the benchmark.

Great photo's as always GC. There is another old adage that springs to mind about it being the photographer not the camera! That said, having it with you also helps.

GC - your pictures upset me. I couldn't take shots as good as those if you gave me all the kit in the world and three weeks in the highlands to use it. It's just not fair!

Ta chaps. Being here full time, working from home and looking over the loch (the top one is from my garden), I just keep an eye on the light.

July and August are almost a write off photographically - but it's when everyone seems to come here with their cameras!

Try read the sigma 30mm (Mk1) combined with the nex 7 lens on DP review. Then come back again .... I think they have a much better opinion on things than a small sub section on a car forum ! And they debate it against a leica lens .
