The 4k shooting must be simply for bragging rights and market differentiation rather than actual improved output.

The RX100 lens is good, and the sensor is OK, but to make 4k shooting (and the associated file sizes and/or compression) worthwhile, you need an excellent lens and sensor to match. Otherwise, all you are landing yourself with is a big, compressed file which in quality is not different to 1080p.
4k movie mode is pretty good;

You've actually highlighted exactly what I mean.

A 4K screen capture of a film of a static object, which is well lit in daylight, shot at F2.0 (or close to that) is always going to look great.

However, back in the real world, and real world conditions, where the average user of a pocket camera is concerned who is shooting a moving object which is not perhaps well lit at F8.0 so you can actually keep what you're filming in focus, through a pocket sized zoom lens, the difference between a 4K video and 1080P is going to be negligible at best.

The main difference is going to be file size as to get the files on a card, the 4K will have to be compressed to hell and back. I'm happy to be proven wrong of course, as I'd love it to be the case that it's worth it, but I doubt it.

To give some background, I do film 4K with a dedicated 4K camera with a full size sensor, though Canon 'L' primes. If you can have total control of what you are shooting, with that kind of kit, the benefit of 4K starts to become useful. However, most of the time, even with the option to shoot in 4K and that kit, I won't.
Understood, I just use for hobby purposes.

This isnt me, but it still looks pretty good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX8I_EMvXmk

I have an old 400d with a couple of lenses that is rarely used due to its size. I am thinking about replacing it with an RX100iii but the G7X is a fair bit cheaper (£520 v £380) for similar levels of performance.

The thing that I like about the RX is the pop up EVF. To those that own an RX100iii what is this actually like? Is it a gimmick that isn't useful or is it a killer feature?

Is the price of the iii likely to drop to G7x levels with the launch of the iv?

And can anyone tell me in non-press release language why I would bother paying the extra for the iv over the iii considering I wont be shooting much if any video?

Re. the pop up EVF, I only had brief experience with the RX111 as both mine broke down as soon as I used them in cold conditions, so I gave up. But I did find it a boon, necessary for me. I can't get on with rear screens and find using them in any thing even approaching 'light' is a pain - the one on my A7 I find useless unless it is really dim - so it was a great addition.

SWMBO wants a camera the size of an LF1 with a RX100-size sensor and 7-10X zoom. She says money-no-object but I think the laws of optics/physics might be, otherwise there would be one on the market.

Am I right in thinking you simply can't have a compact lens of that zoom range that can cover a large sensor, regardless of cost?

I think you're right, 3x zoom is about the limit for any zoom lens considered to be high quality.

I have an RX100i and love it except the lack of a viewfinder. It can't compete with my Canon DSLR with a 70-200mm (effectively 105-320mm) f2.8 zoom, but only costs £250 and fits in my pocket.

As a matter of interest, why does she want 7x or 10x zoom, what kind of photography is she into?
Imo most people think they need mega-zoom lenses, but actually they'd be better off with something like 21-75mm.

Landscapes (flower meadows), birds and insects (so she also wants good macro!). I've suggested a Panasonic GM5 with the kit 12-32mm, as I usually have my m43 telephoto and macro lenses with me, but that's too big for her.

I really think she'll have to compromise on something if she insists on a pocketable camera.

Easy, the Panasonic CM1 (yes you will have to use digital zoom...) 1 inch sensor, 4k video, RAW, etc

Interesting but (and I forgot to mention) she'd also quite like an optical viewfinder! At least she's not this picky about most other things ...

28mm (quite a good compromise), pocketable, $1000 (let me guess, £1000?)

So the benefit over a £250 RX100i is...

My trusty RX100 Mk1 excelled itself on Sunday when I was attending the annual Porsche meet with the family and kids, so was eventually distracted from looking at shiny Porsche cars to wandering around the stunning gardens of Chatsworth House watching the kids enjoying themselves , however, what happened on the walk round the garden was quite astonishing because totally unannounced the Red Arrows flew overhead, and by pure fluke I was holding my RX100 in hand so swung the camera upwards and took a few pics in the split second of opportunity that I had. And I was kicking myself because a little earlier I had set the camera to continuous shoot mode rather than single. Nevertheless I did manage to take a few half decent pics which I'm very pleased with.

One of the pics is shown below at a lowered resolution of 1600 x 1067 px and 684 KB compared to the original pic which is 5472 x 3648 px and 5.5 MB in size.

Had I been carrying around an DSLR on the day I don't think I would have had time to have taken off the lens cover, let alone take the pic.
