OP, if you are going to have a bash at this calibration malarky, maybe try to get one of the proper test images as well.

It will look a little like this.



It'll give you a good cross section of tonal range, vivd colours, flesh tones etc. all on one proof.

They're probably available online.

Cheers, that's interesting. I wonder whether that's a difference in calibration or a difference in taste?

There's not enough range in your sample image to really calibrate it to be honest, you need more tones and darks as well as some stuff at the higher end. Basing it on one image wont sort out things like gamma, you're better off buying a Spyder type device

OP, try the X-rite Color Munki, not expensive, scores well in comparative tests and is easy to use for your screen whether it is monitor or laptop.
