No, because then there'd be no light on the subject. With only one Speedlight I think you'll have to concentrate on the subject and deal with the b/g later, as current. Speedlights are great for mobility - I use one all the time for weddings where I have to dart about - but IMHO studio work needs studio lighting. Even one proper monobloc and a softbox can make an amazing difference in power and spread.
