As the days are getting shorter and I'm learning more about my camera I thought I should give night photography a try, I find it quite a challenge but also fun and rewarding. It would be good to see other peoples efforts. Here's one of mine from my first attempt, to start things off.

Cracking start there. I love night photography. It's a chance to use the camera to capture stuff that the eye struggles with. Most off the time its the other way around.

One thing I try to do is photograph at times where it is not truly dark, ideally the blue hour just after sunset or just before sunrise. You still get the fantastic contrast between the artificial lighting and the shadow areas but with more interest in the sky and just enough ambient to keep plenty of detail in the darker areas. A few of mine:

Some great images there. I really need to get some evening shots of London although always nervous of expensive camera gear in cities at night.

Here's a couple of mine.

I am occasionally out at night with a camera. No decent cities to shoot locally so I have to put up with dark skies.

I had a go at a dusk shot last weekend from the side window of the house. Quite pleased with the results. Would love to do more city shots at night though.

Around midnight last night I was creeping around the church yard opposite my house, as you do, and took these two. I'm not actually happy with either of them, but feel they both have something about them that I can't put my figure on.
Annoyingly there was movement in the cobwebs which I could do nothing about and though it was shot at ISO100, it looks pixelated after processing it a bit. Probably under exposed to start with?
Picture 2 has that horrible red blotch by the window that I don't know how to remove. Any PS advice on how to get rid of it?

There are some stunning images here gents. As usual I'm humbled. Rob D, can you post a couple of individual shots from your collage? They look breath taking.

It's always an inspiration coming in here.

Some excellent pictures on here already!

A few from me, taken last year. Going to try and get up again this year. The embankment from just west of Westminster Bridge heading east offers no end of opportunities.

Fantastic contributions so far, cheers everyone beer

Robert C what was it like in London from a safety point of view? I'm not far from there but I am wary of lugging my kit around at night on my own.

Here's one from Historic Rochester that I took last Wednesday evening. Luckily the river was quite calm, helping with the reflections.

ETA- No matter what I tried I couldn't get the pesky neon sign above the castle entrance in focus.

These are lovely, cities at night look great and I've just been reading about the "blue hour" in the latest DSLRP magazine - I'd have imagined that waiting for proper black skies would be better, but the article and the shots above suggest not necessarily. I must try to get somewhere this winter but my big problem is trying to find a decent vantage point - local places like Chester have the buildings but not much in the way of high vantage points, Manchester has more but they tend to be private buildings.

And as for the astro stuff, once again, great shots.

Looks to me more like an overexposure issue due to the very bright neon sign compared to the rest, especially if it's quite a long exposure to start with.

I'm not Robert C, but took some photos in the same area earlier in the year. If you stay in the 'tourist' areas then safety will be fine, you will be one of many photographers!!!

for some Nighttime City photography inspiration I'd recommend having a look at Thomas Birke's Work https://www.flickr.com/photos/move_lachine/

Thanks. Are you saying it's impossible to get that properly in the shot?

I am off to Greenwich again later, hoping for some good shots and decent light.
