They share the same sensor right?

Sony charge from USB allows them to not bother with a plug in charger and saves them money.

Having bought a wall charger and 2 batteries for the a7r I kind of wish they had just shipped the charger too.

Dont know about the mk3 but the a7r you cannot use it and charge it at the same time (aka no continous power) so have to hack a battery solution instead, stupid!

Apparently.

As for charging - I travel all the time and each less charger makes hell of a difference. I wanna cry every time I'm packing the charger for 1Dx. A lot of it is also spent in the car so being able to charge my computer, phone and camera with one tiny charger and even more - while on the road is amazing.
I'd rather have this option and be able to buy a charger than get a free charger and not be able to charge via USB.

Absolutely - even better that I can can carry my dinky little USB charger in my pocket when skiing, and use the same backup for supplying juice to my RX, iPhone and GoPro!

I'll be interested to hear how you get on with the G7X. For me lack of EVF is a deal-breaker, now I'm used to Sony's focus peaking on the A7R and RX. I guess they'll add one to the G7X Mk2!

Think the g1x mk2 has an optional evf.

I don't mind USB charging, just the lack of proper charger and the lack of ability to use the camera whilst charging.

Canon (and afaik all OEM) batteries are silly money. Compatibles seem fine and a fraction of the price - assuming they are available. You probably know that of course.

Ah, had wondered about that when Rottie originally posted the question. I would guess they won't be long arriving but of course that might not be soon enough for existing owners.

Oh I know that. I paid almost £150 for a battery 1Dx. I wasn't impressed. But £60 for THIS size battery is taking the piss.I think I paid £36 for battery for RX100 ( my Sony action cam uses them)

As for third party ones. They are significantly cheaper but from my experience they also don't last as long as the original ones. I have three spare ones for S120, good brands I think Varta and Duracell but the original one lasts significantly longer.

Well I usually buy a couple of 3rd party spare batteries for a new camera aiming for 2 for a tenner deals if they are around and have never noticed a difference in performance or time to failure. I try to cycle through them equally when I can - though as the cameras get older and less used that may not be very meaningful.

My ancient Pentax Option from about 2005 worked just as well if not better on the cheapos and all 3 batteries eventually faded away at the same time through sheer age and lack of use I would guess. I bought 2 more cheapos last year as I still use the camera for document copies from time to time.

For the 1D3, bought pre-loved but little used, I added a medium priced third party unit (About £50 iirc as I had to get one there and then before leaving on a trip the next day so mail order was not an option. Reputable brand but though it works well enough now I thought in the early days it might be a bit dodgy. A little later I added a £16 wonder which is absolutely fine. The original Canon and both replacements all work fine other than some spurious "recalibrate" messages from time to time over the 5 years I have had them.

I do wonder if the non-oem "known brands" may be less good than the nameless cheapies for some reason.

Maybe I have been lucky with my brandless purchases (most of which have probably come through 7dayshop) but I have no idea if that is a significant factor.

Obviously it's all a bit immaterial if there are no third party alternatives available yet. Another early adopter challenge!

I've just bought a RX100 (Mk1) as we're planning a trip to Cape Town and I didn't think it was a good place to stroll about swinging an SLR!

The thing I've found odd is the instruction manual only describes things like how to put the battery in. The actual operation of the camera seems to be completely trial and error!

Luckily it is reasonably intuitive, but I'm so used to getting an instruction manual like a book.
It's on-line... check out the sony website

You can buy genuine Sony batteries for about £20 each.

I'm not sure if you RX100 owners have seen this accessory kit:

http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/actioncam-batter...

It contains a spare battery & a stand-alone USB input charger with car cigarette lighter adapter. It costs £60, but then it is from Sony.

Not sure where the £60 for a battery came from. Official Sony battery for £30 (still not cheap though):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NP-BX1-Rechargeable-C...

An interesting thread on DPReview about third-party batteries with the observation that one that was purchased didn't have the internal temperature measuring thermistor & that he was induced to remove a negative review by the seller:

So, I was looking for a compact camera, did the usual PH search via google and came to the conclusion that the RX100 was the daddy.

Just won a second hand mk2 off Ebay, yay.

Then read this thread and find out they are bit fiddly to use. My Mrs aint gonna like that.

I assume that for someone (my wife) with no interest, knowledge or inclination to learn about how to use a camera it can just be picked it up, point and shoot and still get a decent image? If you can't then it'll have to go back on the bay.

She only needs to know two buttons... on/off and shutter release. One of you needs to know how to upload and delete. Everything else is a bonus.

Stick it on green iAuto and try yellow iAuto+ for poor light conditions. It really is a brilliant camera.
