Please put the f****ing stick down!!

What on earth is going on with people taking 'selfies' at the end of a fking great stick? To be honest I've never understood the 'selfie' in the first place, but to take a picture of yourself at arms length and then in addition a stick has left me completely bemused. What's wrong with a compact pocket tripod? No arm in the air with some plum at the other end trying to lean back, no unnecessary 'stick' and no horrible shadow. Is it just me who can't bare this crap?
No, it's not just you.
Over Christmas I was on safari. I was sitting in the front row of the vehicle with my friend and at one point an elephant walked past the back of us and was probably only 5m away. My friend and I both turned around to get photos of it only to find all 6 of the people in the 2nd and 3rd rows of seats were facing us trying to get selfies with the elephant.
One of them was even trying to use one of the sticks despite the fact she could barely wield it within the roof supports.

What does it matter? It's better than handing your camera or phone to some random stranger only to have them bugger off with it.
I know PH'ers like to whinge but this is borderline pathetic!
No one mentioned using a stick in case someone stole the camera. This is the point of the compact tripod, you put your camera on it and take a picture of yourself. Job done, no stick in the picture and no arm held in the air.I know PH'ers like to whinge but this is borderline pathetic!
To be honest I can't justify my hatred for it. I just can't get my brain around it.

It was for this reason my wife bought one for our recent holiday. She had her camera pinched by some low life who said he would take a pic of her and her mates a while ago and won't trust people with her phone to take pics since that time.I know PH'ers like to whinge but this is borderline pathetic!
Also, when there's just two of you on holiday, you always end up with just one of you on photo's whereas with one of these sticks, you can both get in the photo quite easily.
I agree though, they do look fking stupid and I was cringing the first few times she used it.

I've only seen one person using one so far.
He was fitting his Go Pro to it as we went up in a cable car in Val D'Isere last year. He then promptly went off down the slope, way faster than I could ever hope to ski it, recording the whole thing as he went!
I think you saw some sort of GoPro mount, not a selfie stick. He was fitting his Go Pro to it as we went up in a cable car in Val D'Isere last year. He then promptly went off down the slope, way faster than I could ever hope to ski it, recording the whole thing as he went!
I don't own one because I don't want my ugly face in the pictures but I can see why people use them. Wider field of view than taking a selfie with no stick and much easier than having to set up a tripod.
Now people using iPads as cameras... those are the real idiots.

What's going on?
Perfectly obvious I'd have thought.
The way in which they are used by some people will be as annoying as the use of ordinary cameras without poles.
Their function though is pretty self explanatory.

no I didn't get, want or ask for one.
I did however work out their function all on my own without having to ask.
