How about this for a "selfie" - my Dad took it around 1955

That's great fun, I like it. I wonder what it would have been like if he had chosen to dump the tripod & with an outstretched arm, hold his camera on a stick?

That's excellent - though I'm surprised there's no sign of other movement. I'm guessing at least a 30s exposure.

Yeah I haven't bothered to edit the photo. It was a really dull day so none of the pictures were anything special. This was also before I discovered the wonders of shooting in RAW.

I think just being outside in public taking photos with an iPad normally is bad enough!

Niagara Falls was a magnet for the ipad/tablet wielding tourists when I visited last year (note that this photo was NOT taken with such a plank of electronicness biggrin)

Shutter open while the light-pen was drawing the face, in a pitch black room...... Then a single flash to capture the person.

If you want to see some crazy "selfies" that my Grandfather took in the 1950's , have a look at these http://www.sdjouhar.com/gallery_220604.html

Brilliant. I should have thought of that.

Wonder how many takes it took to get it right?!

I love it, but it's a self-portrait; not a selfie.

One is a careful and considered photograph where you are the subject, the other is putting your own gurning mug in front of the subject (that's my definition anyway!)

I have a selfie stick smile

I don't use it with my phone, I unscrew the phone holder piece and use the tripod thread to put my Sony RX100 on.

It's actually great for getting a shot over the top of a crowd or in a busy place which looks quite impressive when you view the picture as the camera is about 12+ feet in the air when the old selfie stick is fully extended and held aloft!

I also use it for shots of cars and other stuff when I'm walking about as the wide angle view looking down from a height gives a nice perspective.

Oh and I've actually used it for the odd selfie as the RX100 lets you flip the screen up exactly for this purpose smile

Never thought I would own one and even moaned on here about them when the topic cropped up last time, but now I'm a convert!

laugh...you were doing so well too! Fantastic getting the camera up there in the air for some shots, but of course, there's never a stick in the photo itself. It's when your eye is lead down a stick, into a hand and down the arm to the subject that bugs me! The way in which you use it, as with many others, must surely be as intended and has opened up all sorts of photographic possibilities.

NO real issue with people using to take shots of themselves (this is the "me-me-me" facebook generation after all).

But BIG issue when the stick starts impeding on other people's view...

E.g.:

Everglades - alligators swimming alongside boat - dumb teenagers in front rows stuck their sticks out the whole time. Result: I have lots of photos of sticks with an alligator behind them.

Le Mans - dutifully take up our viewing position in plenty of time, with good view of track for telephoto shots. As soon as race starts, a forest of sticks (and arms admittedly) appears from over our shoulders, blocking every single shot of mine...

I was sorely tempted to help them park their sticks where the sun don't shine... selfish idiots.

Tottenham Hotspur just banned them from White Hart Lane. Best decision they've made since signing Erikson.

So selfie sticks are rubbish, but tripods are fine?

Why, exactly?

Not that I condone their use or anything, I'm just interested to know why you think one device for holding a camera is acceptable, and another isn't.

Where do you stand on, say, monopods? Or propping a camera up on a low wall? Are they acceptable?

I think what people are saying that having a stick specifically to take photos of yourself is just naff. Tripods are used for very different reasons. As mentioned, I don't have a problem with them. People want to look stupid, let 'em. Live and let live and all that.

I use mine for all of these ...... but occasionally think in the opposite direction. (It saves crawling round the garden)

As previously said..put a camera on a tripod, point it at yourself if that's your subject & take a photo. Great. Not put camera on stick, hold at arms length, lean back & take photo (to include stick & arm disappearing into edge of frame).
Don't get me wrong, I believe everyone has the right to use a stick however they want. Just as I have every right to my belief that the end result is generally ridiculous if taking a selfish. (unlike the cat pic above, which again proves that used sensibly fantastic results can be achieved)

I say fk tripods. I just use a monopod, then run really quickly into the shot before it falls over.

Do you really not see the difference between carrying a selfie stick which is small, light and folds in itself so neatly that you can literally carry it in your jeans pocket or permanently attached to the camera and use it within a second and on the other hand carrying much bulkier tripod, setting it up, leaving the camera exposed to thieves etc?

And why on earth does it offend you so much??? I understand if somebody is obstructing your view but for me people can attach their cameras to a frozen chicken for all I care...
