If you want to see some crazy "selfies" that my Grandfather took in the 1950's , have a look at these http://www.sdjouhar.com/gallery_220604.html
These are great I've recently been given one of these and having resisted the initial urge to use it to beat the person giving it to me senseless, I am quite intrigued to see if I could get some shots from an unusual perspective with it. Provided I can keep it steady enough, given the fairly slow shutter speeds used on my Z1.
Perhaps we should think of it as a poor mans Phantom

I use my monopod to hold my camera high for photos like this. Not for selfies but it is still a camera on a stick:

D700 set to take a photo every five seconds, 24mm lens, choose the best ones.

I'm in two minds about that last gif. I approve of the stick when used to get action videos etc. but when I see someone spending more time looking up into their camera on a stick than watching where their feet are while a mile up a cliff face, I just think his ego is going to kill him. His choice so that's that.

Agree some extreme sports are worthy of a stick. That guy though is so ego driven that he may kill himself. 'Look! Look how fking cool I am doing this!'Sticks have become a pandemic! They're absolutely everywhere in Venice! Can't move for the things. One compensation though, a rather distressed American lady had lost her iPhone off the end into the canal never to be seen again despite valiant but comical attempts by the locals using a magnet on a fishing line. Best bit was her iPhone case had all her credit cards in it. Quite why she thought having an iPhone and credit cards a metre from the end of her arm in a crowded city was a good idea is beyond me.
We flew back into Gatwick a few weeks back and everyone was walking towards baggage claim so the corridor was pretty crowded. This guy near the front just stopped dead in his tracks to take a selfie in the middle of the corridor......almost causing a pileup. I can kinda understand people wanting to get a picture of themselves with a famous landmark, or something else interesting - but a plain grey corridor in the middle of Gatwick airport? WTF?
This is the thing that gets my goat about them. It's not so much the vanity of wanting to take a selfie in various situations that is annoying. It's the total disregard that people taking selfies appear have for those around them.
