Canon - Error 01
Discussion
Had Error 01 come up recently and the camera wouldn't take anything. Swapped the lens and all worked fine.
I take it that the lens is goosed? It's had a hard life - been dropped more that once so I guess it's the end?
It's an 18-135 which I bought with the body instead of an 18-55 kit lens. It's been very worthwhile, what's the opinion on just buying another?

Could be the lens, but before buying a new one, have you tried cleaning the contacts?

I had a similar problem on my EOS300d, paired with a Tamron 70-300, both bought 2nd hand.
I found that if I "reset" the lens by taking if off the camera, and re-attaching and rebooting the camera, it worked.
Not ideal, especially on the hill at Goodwood or at an airshow, although I managed to get it down to a fine art in the end!
All kit replaced now though.
Local camera shop reckoned it could possibly have just needed cleaning, but ended up upgrading both bits of kit in the end.
