A while ago I read a very good comment about the lack of voice-over on videos showing events, holidays, outings etc and what the guy said was along the lines of-

"Imagine you are in the canteen at work, and someone asks how was your trip, holiday, event whatever? And you pull out the packet of photos you've just got back from the chemist. You hand them over and let him look through them one by one. Would you stay dead quiet while he looked through them, maybe put some music on?"

Whatever.
As a (ex) sound engineer I agree with what you say, however the loud over compressed music in YT videos these days is all the rage. it's a fine line you have to be aware of I agree.

It's often thought to have come about accidently by people not knowing what they are doing but the famous youtubers are "so cool" it's now the done thing. Personally I don't really think that and it's more to do with modern music and the dreaded "Radio Mix".

It's like back in the day for me. A huge new rock band present me with their "sound" and I have to make it presentable to hundreds of people live. It's getting that fine line correct of doing it right technically yet making sure the energy and emotion of the sound isn't lost and a lot of tussle with musicians.

Sound gets overlooked so much in video production these days. I've a background in live, studio and broadcasting and the best way to judge your levels and picture quality is to watch and listen to the VT on as many devices you have to hand and judge were it's going wrong. Once you get that sussed you know via your own monitoring gear a ball park each and every time.

BTW Chronic Sinusitis has all but destroyed my hearing now so I can't really comment if the audio was that bad or not biggrin

I can her him talk clearly. That's a bonus for me.

Interesting stuff, Andy, and I'm sorry to hear about your hearing. Fortunately for me mine is still very good, possibly because I have always made a point of wearing hearing protection (my long hair used to hide the ear plugs at the many gigs I attended, so I wasn't accused of being a wimp smile)

I think a lot everything depends on who one hopes to attract as viewers to one's YT video. If one hopes to attract people who like loud incidental music then I daresay the levels were fine and 'on trend'. Still, the video did have 'ploughing match' in the title, and having attended a few of these I'd hazard that there are not many trendy people amongst the audience smile

I have a bit of dashcam stuff that I'd like to present for discussion, but I'm pretty hopeless with tech stuff.

Reg Local suggested using Lightworks for editing, but that doesn't work with our version of Windows.

Then I came across VideoPad and started playing around with the free version of that, and making a bit of progress, but I've now run out of time and it's stopped working for me. The thing is, I don't want to spend money on a package that I might not be able to make sense of, so I'm a bit stuck at the moment.

I'll go back through this thread and see if i can make any progress with the editing systems referred to here. Incidentally, I've heard that YouTube has a video editing facility, but i don't know how it works, so that's another option I guess.

Thank you for that. Unfortunately I'm such a numpty with computers, and anything related thereto, it might take me a while to get the hang of it before I can treat you all to any of my masterly examples of driving expertise - but I'm sure they'll be worth waiting for if they ever appear. biggrin
