Currently have an EOS 400d which we bought 10 year ago and while it's been a decent camera, I think it's time to move on to something more up to date to include wi-fi and GPS tagging etc.

The 70d appears to be the obvious replacement (we also looked at the 7d Mark II, but the extra cost doesn't appear to be justified for the sort of usage we'd be making), but I wonder whether we should wait for the 80d, given that the replacement must be due relatively soon?

Cheers

Hmm - not heard anything much about an 80D and I suspect it would be largely the same as a 70D so if I was you I would go for it smile

Thanks - will also be purchasing a GoPro, any ideas if the '4' is soon to be superseded?!

Back in the day the upgrades were worth it, these days DSLRs are that good at handling noise lshooting in low light isn't as much of a problem.

Unless you're shooting fast sports such as Motorsport a 60D would be more than adequate, your money is better spent on lenses, it doesn't matter how good the body is if it's looking through a £50 lens

A 7D mk1 will do all you want and more

The GPS feature is all very well, but it chews through batteries. Yep, you can buy cheap spares from eBay, but you then have to make sure they're all fully charged before leaving the house! I can easily shoot 600-1,200 photos in a day at an event, so I'd hate it.

Nicked from canon rumours:
The 50D was announced in August 2008
The 60D was announced 24 months later in August 2010
The 70D was announced 35 months later in July 2013
If the pattern continues, expect the 80D in July or August of 2017....

On that basis I wouldn't be waiting for the 80d if I wanted an upgrade soon.

70D over the 60D due to the lack of MFA on the 60D.

You've not actually said what you use the camera for...
The 70D is meant to be nearly as good as the 7D as a sports camera and marginly better at high ISO, but the 7D is what, 6 years old now and you'd be buying second hand. Still a good camera though, for the money.
If the wifi is important to you, then the 70D is the way to go, I don't think it has GPS.
Ask yourself what is your 400D lacking and then find yourself the camera that does what your 400D does + what you feel is missing.

I run a 70D its a top bit of kit, far better than the 7Dmk1(5 year old tech and hard to use imo) ,I don't get the 7Dmk2 either misses out of a lot of features I use.

Gopro 4 is quite new, also.

ALso 70D does great movie clips.

Don't buy a 60D it's not a great Camera, I waited a long time to upgrade my 40D as the 50D and 60D were quite poor and even worst for noise than my 40D !!

70D moved the game on big time, better auto focus by miles, 3 massive improvments below over the 60D
and also wifi for shoot remote from ipad which is great.

19 cross-type point AF system and 7 fps continuous shooting at full resolution
Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology
Moveable screen for creative framing

I upgraded to a 70D from a 550D a few months ago and can't fault the camera.
Haven't heard anything about the 80D yet but i don't think there will be much difference between the 70 and the 80.

I find the 70 a lot easier to use than the 550, the rear scrren being touch operated is a great help and i find it more intuitive than the 550

I've replaced my 70d with Sony/Leica because the IQ was disappointing - but functionally it was brilliant. Don't think an 80d will offer much more (24MP maybe) and for a lot more £s.
