Ive only had my P4 for 3 days so still learning the ropes, but I'm confused. Today whilst in P mode, I was flying around manually. About quarter a mile away, trees were the only obstacle between me and drone.

Yet, I lost signal? These things are meant to fly for miles so why have I lost signal after a quarter mile?

Electric cable, lots of metal fencing, other radio controlled stuff may all have influence.

I was only 100 yards away today when I got 'weak signal' - there was another drone a few yards from mine, so I guess that might have been the problem (?)

what I was up to:

It's a weird one. But bit scary when your drone is far away and it suddenly loses signal! Thank goodness for RTH!

Great capture! That's different!

The RF is a very short wavelength, leaves on tress especially when wet would certainly cut out transmission as would your hand infront of the antenna.

There is also the possibility of phasing due to signal reflections of buildings even the ground/angle of antenna(45o is best) or other atmospheric conditions. 2.4ghz is really only line of sight transmission for maximum reliability and signal. The receiver in the Phantom isn't that immune from outside interference either and a strong nearby RF source could overload it but at 2.4ghz that's not often unless close to a cell tower.

Try it in open space but remember, 1/4 mile is over 400 meters. You are only allowed 500 meters and line of sight at all times so you won't be flying miles.

Fair enough. Cheers for that.

And to be fair, it probably wasn't even 1/4 mile, just guessing, and I have no intention of flying miles away haha

Other drones? I've been 2k out with no problem, but this morning got weak signal warnings and it was +/- 100 yards out (over the sea, and I was on the beach, so nothing in the way)

Fair enough! I intend to film some cruise ships in Portsmouth next week and I doubt they're within 1640ft :P

Water can do funny things to 2.4ghz if you're low over it. That's why a few people have lost theirs flying over indoor swimming pools, 5.8ghz isn't an issue though.

Don't suppose there is anyway to upgrade a P4 to 5.8?

I'm not too sure but its probably not worth it as 5.8ghz is limited to 25mw whereas 2.4ghz is 100mw, so much more power.

How is everyone getting on about having the correct paperwork to fly one of these things?

You don't need any paperwork if you're flying for hobby use. Worth getting BMFA membership though to get their public liability insurance, its nice and cheap
