Quick question.

I want to use point if interest on the spinnaker tower. Obviously, to set POI I have to be above it, no? So how would one go about setting the location if I cannot go above the tower, as its higher than 400ft?

Start your flight from the top of the tower. Then you can fly at 800 ft.

This is how I fly at 3000 ft. I can start my flight at 2600 ft!

It's utterly ridiculous.

How high was I here? 2000 ft above sea level or 200 ft below where I took off?

(Answer to your question - just turn off the stupid 400 ft restriction)

Yes you do have to be above the object to set the point of interest.

By default the maximum altitude is set to 120m, but you can adjust that up to 500m in the settings.

Obviously that comes with it's own legal difficulties if you have an accident.

First thing I did was set to 500m.

Like when I got an RS6 and got rid of the 155mph limit

Why on earth wouldn't you?

I'd like to stick to legal restrictions as much as possible in a city like Portsmouth. I've been up to 800ft but I've been sensible and in the middle of nowhere.

I'd need to go up to 580ft to set it as a POI. I could do this quickly in about 60 seconds snd come back down to 400ft todo My POI video I guess.. I wouldn't wanna be above the 400ft limit for long!

That's the thing... middle of nowhere and you can be creative. Anywhere populated you'll need to be legal/sensible. It's common sense IMO.

One size does NOT fit all.

I might just set the POI quickly and fly back down to 400ft to be safe :haha:

I'd recommend using a GPS forecast like this one http://satpredictor2.deere.com/chartvisibility?add...

you don't want to be relying on GPS at over 400ft and then loose it because of solar activity!

So, there I was, manually orbiting the spinnaker tower, doing a very good job, when half way around the tower, it decided to lose signal and completely disconnect, ditectly behind the big tower bit on the top of the tower..

It's safe to say my drone had a brush with the tower whilst returning to home, and I am extremely lucky to still own one..!

Here's my other photos from the day..

Spinnaker tower yikes

I know it's been a while but surely that's in HIRTA territory.

The big red circle is the restricted area.

My hand drawn circle is where I was flying.

I do look at restricted areas before I fly smile

It's not a restricted area it's an area of extreme radio communications and GPS jammers.

Them big boats (the grey ones) move around as well and that map wouldn't 100% accurate.

Not really a great area for a flight.

Are you chaps flying for these shots using FPV?

Don't know whether there is a better thread anywhere for my next question? I have a very cheap (was £50 about 2 years ago) chinese drone with a basic camera but I'd like to get something better. Don't know much about the better-spec machines yet but as a minimum I suppose I'd want FPV, return to base and auto-hover. What else is a must-have?

Many people have successfully flown a drone there, I just got unlucky.

Not many people can say their drone hit the Spinnaker Tower and lived laugh
