Thanks the advice chaps. The Standard is all funds will permit as it's a Chrimbo gift from the OH and I'm already contributing. At least they hold a bit of value so may be able to trade up in future. Look out for an inexpert photo from me on this thread in January smile
If you can stretch to it, the Autel X-Star Premium has a much better camera (it tests about as good as the old Inspire X3) and gets consistently good ratings. Autel are also reputed to have much better service than DJI.

What is your experience with DJI's customer service?

The key word was reputed - only what I've read on the forums. Their support is legendary for it's unhelpfulness, and they're quite aggressive when it comes to the competition.

So you have no actual experience yet you are very happy to gossip and badmouth a business, based on what "somebody on internet said"... As a business owner, that really boils my piss.

I actually had to deal with DJI's online and phone support in regards to two separate drones recently and I found them nothing but helpful, prompt and accurate.
Every step is very well documented, they didn't charge me for next day UPS there and back despite broken Mavic being fully my fault and I would recommend them to anyone. HAVING AN ACTUAL EXPERIENCE

I was actually holding back on badmouthing them, but if you want something more concrete, they were caught paying people to post bad reviews of other companies' products, and their employees were caught on non DJI forums making up reports of crashes that didn't happen. One of the organisers of the UK Drone show caught them posting fake responses on his YouTube reviews of other drones. It's left a pretty bad taste in people's mouths.

You can search online for actual customer service reports, but picking a random Amazon review gives a good summary https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R1SV9JQ...

Or here: http://www.photographybay.com/2015/07/15/another-d...

Edited to add:

I have to point out that before you jumped down my throat, I simply said that Autel are *reputed* to have better service than DJI. Nothing more than that.

Although it does not look they are legally allowed to sell that drone in the UK.

How is that in any way related to their customer support?

Bloke complaints that DJI doesn't want to send him an individual part. Try calling car dealership and asking them to send you individual gearbox component etc They will tell you to FO just as quickly.

You do realise that for every 1 person click-baiting by naming their poor blog post "service from hell" (really? HELL? It's a drone FFS, not an artificial lung) there are probably 1000s of others who like me were fully satisfied with the service received but of course just didn't feel the need to shout from the roof tops about the "heavenly service" (SWIDT?) they received? It's just not in human nature.

I'm sorry but you also lost all remains of credibility when you said that the OP should buy a drone from a company who states on their website that :
The X‑Star Premium CANNOT BE SOLD in countries that require CE certification.
Countries that require CE certification:

Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Croatia
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Latvia
Liechtenstein
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Malta
Netherlands
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Romania
Slovakia
Slovenia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Turkey
United Kingdom

I want to see how helpful their support will be when you damage your drone bought as a grey import in a country that it is illegal to fly in not being homologated, or how happy he will be when he will have to send it to US for any repairs.

My mistake if the Autel isn't officially available in the UK. Reading a lot of the different drone news sites, you loose track of region specific stuff.

I'm also sorry if I've offended you. The original question was about the best drone for the money and I was just trying to help.

Anyway...

If you're going for a Phantom 3 Standatd and eventually find the range to be a problem you can modify your transmitter with one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Itelite-DBS-Flight-Range...

I have one for my P3 Advanced and it's a good bit of kit.
